Milk Allergy Mom's come in please

My DS is 15 weeks old and has just recently been diagnosed (after a biopsy from a sigmoidoscopy) with a milk protein allergy. He was put on Alimentum last month when the blood streak/mucus bowel movements started. ...and about a week ago the blood stopped and the poop was thicker, less watery...the ped GI said to keep him on the ALimentum...since it can take a month for it to work...and if blood comes back we need to go on an amino acid based formula..elecare/neocate/ or nutramagin AA....

So today, after over a week of no blood and a month on alimentum..I saw two streaks of blood and mucus...I am so frustrated and nervous that if he can't tolerate Alimentum and needs a prescription formula, does that mean he is going to have this allergy for life?

Are there any mom's who's LO was on the prescription formula and outgrew their milk allergy?

TIA

DD had a "milk allergy" and was on elecare from the time she was 5 weeks old.

We actually took her for allergy testing at 10.5 months and she tested negative but we were told to just keep her on elecare because she was almost 1 yr old.

Now we transitioned her to soy milk (just because I think regular milk is nasty) but she eats cheese and regular yogurt with no issues.

There is hope!

We are still questioning if he outgrew it. He was diagnosed at about 3 weeks with the milk allergy (blood in stool). Didn't respond to Nutramigen (the enfamil line of Alimentum). Then went on Neocate (the amino acid formula). It still took another month to get the blood out and because the ped expected better results from him (quicker), we ended up at a GI. He cried A LOT during the first 3 months.

The GI suggested trying yogurt at 10M because many grow out of it...he vomited.

We just had an allergy skin test at 12M. Nothing came back positive, so the allergist suggested that he may be lactose intolerant--which he said can cause blood in stool and vomiting. Well we tried Lactaid and he vomited!!! (Suggesting the milk allergy is still there and it's not a lactose intolerance). We tried a blood test (the allergist told us it was more accurate)...but they couldn't get enough blood out of him. Chat Icon

So...then we tried soy milk. 2oz. on 4 diffferent days (we did 2 days, waited a few days, then did another 2 days). And both times he ended up with red bumps under his mouth, which suggests he is allergic.

It's frustrating...but we go to the ped tomorrow and she said he can stay on Neocate for a while. But as far as I hear, most outgrow this by 3 years old.

DD#1 has a dairy allergy and DD#2 just had a hard time digesting it.

DD#1 is 5 and still has a bad dairy allergy. I really don't see her ever out growing it. She can tolerate it in certain foods if it is cooked for a long period of time. My BFF, her son had a very server allergy and he out grew it at 4.5 years old, so you never know.
I didn't have her on formula, I nursed her, so from the time I found at 6 months until 11 months I cut all dairy out of my diet. Then she went on soy milk/yogurt. Now, she is on almond milk because she didn't like the taste of the soy and still have soy yogurt.

DD #2 had blood in her stool and I think a mild case of reflux. I cut out dairy and noticed a huge change and things got better. I switched her to formula at 3 months but went straight to soy. Allimentium is still a milk based formula and I didn't want to try it. She thrived on the soy and now at 15 months is on whole milk and eats regular yogurt.

From what you described I would give soy a try and if that doesn't work then I would go to Elacare.

Good Luck!

Have you tried the powder version of nutramigen. There is a probitotic in it and a mom on here recommend that I tried that ( I was using a different formula that did not have the probiotic). I asked the GI doc and he said that he saw a lot of good results and that it might stop the need to go to an amino acid product. It totally changed my daughters life. Within maybe 11 days no more blood. Its worth a shot. Allimentum and the liquid nutramigan don't have it.
