BTDT mom please help with milk allergy question
I took DD to GI today b/c of excessive gas and she's not taking more than 2-3oz she is 7wks old. Shes not vomiting or spitting up but has frequent hiccps.
Dr. said she has reflux like alot of babies and to start her on mylanta 3x/day. Also tested her diaper for blood and it was negative. he sent me home with 2 more cards to test for blood with 2 diff stool samples. He testing for a milk allergy and told me to give nutramagen this week and to stop BF for this week.
Those of you whose baby has milk allergy did you have to stop BF? I'm so upset over this. If her the samples come back negative for blood does that mean she does NOT have a milk allergy?

i don't understand...if there's no blood, then you must be avoiding the right foods?

DD never had gas or reflux issues but was passing stool in her blood. They had wanted me to pump and dump for a week while I eliminated dairy from my diet. I only lasted 18hrs before I went back to nursing her(after 18hrs she had only taken 2.5oz of formula) and she never tested positive for blood in the stool again.

Based on the little I know of this, you can stop all dairy products for a few weeks and continue to nurse. If your DC's symptoms clear up, then you know it was dairy. If not, then continue your search for a cause. But, to my knowledge, there are very few, if any reasons that breastfeeding should stop. I would seek a second opinion. Here are a couple of articles regarding dairy allergies, reflux and BFing. Remember that there is no better food for your DC than breastmilk. You can always adjust your diet to meet her needs. I drink lactaid now and am staying away from obvious dairy like cheese and yogurt but there are so many thing that have whey and cassein. She's been crying for an hour and when I pick her up she tries to nurse off me and I hate not being able to nurse her. There was no blood in the first specimen. but if the other 2 come back negative does that rule out milk allergy? then can I go back to nursing?

My DS is allergic to dairy and I continued to EBF while cutting dairy out of my diet. FYI, Lactaid is not dairy free. You'd need to switch to soy or rice milk or some other non-dairy milk.
