Re: MIL doing your taxes

My MIL has done ours in the past, but I'm hesitant to have her do them this year, which has become a HUGE arguing point for me and DH.

In a nutshell - she didn't explain to me why mine were so high (I owed $3,000) and then went on vacation the week taxes were due and didn't file all the paperwork.

Then she told me she would do an ammendment to the taxes to get the proper paperwork in and STILL hasn't done so.

So I don't want to use her, but DH still does.

My FIL used to do my husband's before we got married. I let him do the first year & after that got an accountant.

Re: MIL doing your taxes

My dad is a tax lawyer and accountant. He's really good at what he does and I totally trust him. He has always done my taxes. Now he does my taxes and DH's taxes. I think it definitely depends on the relationship you have with your IL's. DH doesn't care b/c he knows my dad has our best interests at heart and only wants to help us as much as he can.

It wouldn't bother me. We are pretty much an open book with my MIL.

But, if it were an Aunt, Uncle, or Cousin. Yes, it would bother me.

My dad does our taxes...I never thought twice about it. Yes it's MY dad but he's been doing DH's taxes since we started dating and DH never had an issue with it. In fact, DH was paying before my dad started doing his taxes and now he gets a refund because of my dad's advice (before we got married at least).

That is the same thing with us.

Re: MIL doing your taxes

I would only feel weird about my MIL doing our taxes because it is the unwritten rule in his family that you do NOT discuss money with anyone else in the family. HOWEVER, my father has done my taxes and JT's for the last five years. And neither of us have a problem with that because my parents are the ones we go to for financial advice, career advice. We have no secrets. No one on my side of the family does, really. We're all very open about the money we make and spend, etc. So I guess it depends on your relationship with MIL.

Re: MIL doing your taxes

My BIL (DH's brother) is an accountant and is doing our taxes. He is a professional and certainly doesn't care about this kind of stuff. It isn't like he is going around during family events saying, well in January, do you know how much they made? It is actually nice to have it in the family because I know he is looking out for our best interests.

Re: MIL doing your taxes

my mom dose both mine and fh taxes and has for a few years....she does not care what he makes and would never discuss it with anyone. fh does not have a problem letting her do his taxes...she does it for free, and his mom's cousin would charge him about $250, so theres no discussion there.

if he felt uncomfortable with it; he would tell me and that would be that

My MIL is an accountant and has always done DH's taces. She offered to do ours this year, and of course she always does them for free. Would you feel weird having your MIL know all about your finances? I appreciate that she is willing and of course that it would be free but a part of me feels like I want some privacy.

OMG! you are in the EXACT same situation as me! My bro and FIL are accts....if my FIL thinks he is getting anywhere near my finances he has another thing coming. I am also up in the air of what we are going to do. My FIL has a VERY BIG mouth... I dont think family and finances mix.

You should rephrase your question as "How am I going to tell my MIL she is not doing my taxes" ; )

Mine too. The whole family would know how much we make, what we are invested in and how much we got back or owed.

She isn't assertive about it so if we don't bring her the paperwork, she prob just won't ask about it.

My FIL does ours now. I don't have a problem with it at all. I guess it all depends on the person.
