I've seen more women posting their stories on my FB feed and it really is disturbing how many people have been through something like this in their lives. And some of the stories are heartbreaking.

I have a few stories, but the worst was when I worked at JC Penney right out of college. I worked with a guy in the men's dept. One night, it was just the 2 of us working. He said he was having issues with his pants and asked if he thought any of the customers would notice. I looked over and his pants were buttoned but the zipper was down - with his entire penis sticking out. I was shocked, but naively thought "Maybe he didn't know and I need to act like nothing happened so I don't embarrass him." So I told him that yes, I think someone might notice and he should get a new pair of pants, then walked away so he wouldn't feel self conscious.

A few weeks later, I was working with a female co-worker and I brought it up - talking about how I felt sorry that he had to go thru something like that. She said the exact same thing happened to her and we reported him immediately. Of course he got fired, but another co-worker went to his church and she told the paster. The guy got up in front of the entire congregation to admit he had a problem and that he was going to get help. But he never apologized to me or my co-worker.

You know, as I was reading what you wrote - I flashed to all the times that something similar happened to me, and I was shocked at how many instances came flooding to my brain. It makes me so sad.

What a creep!!! I worked at a restaurant in high school as a hostess. Some of the comments that the kitchen staff would say to me (and the other girls) were just totally crossing the line. It makes me cringe thinking about it now.

It could be something as simple as wolf whistling and cat calling by construction workers. If you think about it- it's all sexual harassment in one way or another.
I think most women have experienced some form of it- to varying degrees- at some point of their lives

I don't think there's a woman in the world who hasn't experienced sexual harassment on some level (except for Mayim Bialik of course).

Yes, exactly. It can range from something like an unwanted comment about one's appearance, to something as horrific as a violent assault. #metoo encompasses both harassment AND assault.

Oi - Mayim Bailik. I get where she was coming from, but to say that she never experienced harassment b/c she ate whatever she wanted and allowed herself to remain plain is tone deaf.

Don't forget she dresses modestly too. The solution to sexual harassment and assault apparently lies in something as simple as Lularoe

And in her response says she "basically lives to make women's lives better." Yeah ok, old Lena Dunham.

Wow!

I think most women have been sexually harassed.

I am a HS teacher and I had a coworker who would speak inappropriately about me to his students and they would tell me. He commented on how I was so hot and if he wasn't married, he would marry me. (Fat chance, buddy) He commented on my appearance, body, clothes, etc. He saw me outside of school and commented to students the next day how I looked great even when dressed down with no make up. It was disgusting - especially because he was involving teenage students!

Me too, unfortunately.

Yes, it is shocking and horrifying how many of us have experienced sexual abuse, sexual assault and harassment. More of us have than haven't statistically. Young people, women, and LGBT individuals are particularly at risk. But men and boys are also potential victims. I feel like this needs to be a real focus considering our leader is a self admitted sexual assaulter. Women's rights are definitely being attacked lately.

Re: #metoo

honestly, it's disgusting how it's "just part of life" when you're a woman. it's like we don't even count; we're just to be used to satisfy men's sexual desires and we're supposed to be happy that someone finds us "attractive."

it's happened to me more times than i care to count. it's part of the reason i have issues with food. it got so bad that my brain felt that if i was fat and ugly maybe, just maybe, it would stop. it didn't.

the worst part is when we have taught our women/girls to be part of the problem and make the victim feel guilty.

He does still work there. I did report him. He was mandated to go to counseling. I'm honestly not sure of the specifics.

I no longer work there due the recession and being the low man on the totem pole.

I would be more surprised if a woman said she never experienced sexual assault or harassment. Off the top of my head I can think of 3 distinct situations where it happened to me and that's not even considering "lesser offenses" like cat calls or comments made about my appearance, etc.

Re: #metoo

I remember being in 7th grade and our health teacher used to give the girls shoulder massages.

I think about it now and I get upset. I wish I would have said something. I knew it wasn't right but also thought it was a teacher...

There were always rumors that he was dating one of the students. She would sometimes wait for him outside the class.

It could even be something like hearing an an inappropriate joke in a workplace setting. It's a massive scope.

We're mostly conditioned to accept what seems benign harassment like the catcalling and jokes and things like that. We almost don't think of it is as harassment. We tend to only think it's a big deal when it's something like rape, assault, touching, etc.

Re: #metoo

I am going out on the limb here and admit I have never been harrassed or sexually assaulted. I think its because I don't give off the vulnerable vibe other women might (?). I've always been a little on the heavy side (weight), dress very conservatively (suits for work, and I've always hated skirts and anything "girly") and generally act like a total b#$%$ to guys who piss me off. So yea, count me in w/ the "NOT #metoo" crowd.

Re: #metoo

Me, too.

I worked in restaurants for 10 years. Those places were rife with harassment and assault. There was so much ass grabbing going on that I can’t even count the occasions it happened. More happened as well, but I don’t have time to type it all out.

I'm glad you escaped victimization, but to imply women who have been assaulted give off the "vulnerable vibe" is kind of unfair imo. I don't think I am a vulnerable type yet I have been assaulted as well as harassed.Chat Icon

None of it is ok and no one deserves it no matter his or her appearance, personality, clothing etc.

Please tell me NOT#metoo is something you came up with and it isn't trending. Please. Because if this is a thing and we are countering women who have been harassed and/or assaulted the world is in worse shape then people really will fight over anything.

If you haven't been a victim that's great. I'm glad. But not being a victim means this isn't about you and your story serves no purpose to the millions of women who have faced harassment or assault. The rare woman who hasn't been a victim should be supporting and showing empathy towards those who have.
