Low progesterone (7.6 5w2d) *Update @6w6d

*Update at 6w6d:

baby measuring at 6w1d, so it's small. heartbeat is 90, should be faster. this coupled with the low progesterone was bad news.

doc gave me options including a d&c Chat Icon

he was not optimistic, so i asked if i should keep taking the progesterone. he said i can stop if i want, and that if it's not a healthy pregnancy, all the progesterone would do is hold it longer - healthy or not.

so i think i might stop it. i go back in a week to see what's up.

the morning sickness has been so bad. i feel like the progesterone is making it worse.

*************
5w2d
was at my 1st prenatal visit on tues, when the midwife performed a pelvic exam and thought was uterus felt small for 5 weeks, so she drew blood (wasn't going to at first).

i called to get the results, and she told me my progesterone was lower than she liked. if it was at 9, she'd just call in a script for supplements, but since it was so low, she asked me to come in to see the OB today at 11am (i'm a mess waiting until then). she wants to make sure there is nothing else wrong, and prescribe me meds for nothing. if there is something else wrong, well then that would be another discussion Chat Icon

just hoping that everything in there is ok.

and felt like writing about it to hopefully let it out and feel some relief, but it's not really helping.

anyone here have experience with this?

Re: Low progesterone (7.6 5w2d)

At my first OB appointment they sent me for blood work, when the results came back I also had low progesterone, and it was dropping. I went from I think 5.4-5.2 in 2 days. They prescribed meds that I took until I was about 10 weeks, then they said the placenta would take over. Im now just over 16 weeks and everything is going well. Just try not to stress yourself out.

most OBs like to see it over 10. i would guess they will def give you supplements. there isnt much they can do to tell you if there is an issue at 5w2d. theyll prob do a beta or two to make sure your #s are rising appropriately, and maybe a sono although at this point there wont be that much to see on sono.

are you 100% sure of your ovulation date? being off by a few days this early can make a huge difference. good luck!!! Chat Icon

I was prescribed sups from day 1 with this pregnancy due to previous issues in past pregnancies. My prog. was 14 at 4w and I stayed on them (3x a day) till 11w. I'm now 35w. Hope your visit goes well today! Keep us posted!

in that case i wouldnt stress over the "size of your uterus" or any of that garbage. LMP is a very dated indicator of when you conceived. a few days this early can make a world of difference. my guess is they would prob give you progesterone suppositories. maybe a dating sono but again there wont be much to see this early. try not to stress, it wont help anything and there is nothing you can do either way. good luck!!

I had low progesterone when I was pregnant with my DD. Even with supplements it hovered around 11-12. I stayed on the supplements until I was 12 weeks along and my DD was born happy and healthy.

Good luck. I'm sure it will all be fine. Chat Icon

thanks for the positive stories. it's so relieving to know it's not so bad.

my progesterone was low too at 5 weeks. I was also prescribed crinone and my progesterone went up almost immediately. I'm just shy of my 3rd trimester! Good luck Chat Icon

im sorry your appointment didnt go well Chat Icon Chat Icon

If i read your post right, you should be 6w5d but are measuring 6w1d....being 5 days off doesnt seem to problematic from what my dr explained to me. maybe you ovulated later or it implanted later then you thought?
are you scheduled to go back for another sonogram next week to date it again?

i dont know much about heart rates...my dr said she wont even listen for it until my 11 week appt (we saw it at 7 weeks and that was good enough for her - didnt give me the rate or anything like that). but im pretty sure that the heart is just starting to beat at 6 weeks so it may be normal for it to be a little slower.

i dont want to give false hope, but im just trying to be optimistic. i would continue what you are doing until you can go back one more time to see whats going on again before making any decisions

I don't think you should stop taking it, you're only measuring a few days behind. I think you should go for a second opinion...that's just my 2 cents though Chat Icon

ETA: I was JUST at my drs last night, technically it's not the heart beating but where it's going to be. It's the forming veins and stuff. And 6 weeks is kind of early for that. To be honest, I don't like your doctor and want to punch him in the face

I agree. The good news is that the baby grew from your last visit. At this point, being off by 5 days is not a huge deal. Are they more concerned b/c of how you are measuring or b/c of the hb? Coming from a person who has had multiple losses, I would stay on the progesterone. In the event that something does happen, you wouldn't want to think back and second guess yourself and think of the "what ifs" of if you didn't stop. Good luck!

what he said was that in his opinion, the low progesterone may be a result of an unhealthy pregnancy, and that taking it won't help or hurt.

and yes, i am measuring smaller by 5 days. he called them red flags, and said if it were one or two it would be a different opinion, but there are 3 : small growth, low heart rate and low progesterone, which, btw increased to 10 on it's own before the meds, but at this point who knows what that could mean.

still being hopeful...just really, really cautious. going to stop working out and stop coffee...just in case. it's not like i can stomach that stuff as it is...

Low progesterone (7.6 5w2d) *Update @6w6d

I would NOT stop taking the progesterone just yet. If you don't know when you ovulated and are going by lmp your days could be off. How long were your cycles before you got your bfp? Also, they are measuring something smaller then a sesame seed, their measurement could be a little off as well.

According to this website - http://www.americanpregnancy.org/pregnancycomplications/earlyfetaldevelopment.htm (sorry I can't direct link from my phone) fetal heartbeat from 6-7 weeks is typically 90-110 beats per minute. so your still within range!!

I'm sorry, but I would get a second opinion at this point. for a dr to talk about a d&c when there could still be hope is just wrong to me. I understand why he did, but as a dr he should be doing and saying things to be a little more positive.

I'm sorry you are dealing with this, but please dont give up hope just yet !!!!

Eta- if your progesterone went up a little on its own before you started the meds that's good!! Also, if you at doing suppositories that progesterone will not show up in a blood test because it is going right to the cervix and uterus.

i would not stop taking the progesterone and i would seek out a second opinion before you schedule anything as extreme as a D & C many a pregnancy has started out like this and women have delivered healthy babies. Praying this is the case for you!

good points. although i am also measuring a week behind. not sure when i ovulated, but i do know when we conceived.

was thinking about a 2nd opinion, but i don't want it to be sugar coated either, yknow?

i thnk i may reconsider stopping the prog. it's making me so sick, but it also may hold a 'fighting for it's life' baby.

and the hb is where it should be! you're right! but maybe it's slow for the size it's supposed to be?
