there seems to be a lot of Buddist correlations:
"Dharma" means "protection". By practising Buddha's teachings we protect ourself from suffering and problems. All the problems we experience during daily life originate in ignorance, and the method for eliminating ignorance is to practise Dharma.
Practising Dharma is the supreme method for improving the quality of our human life. The quality of life depends not upon external development or material progress, but upon the inner development of peace and happiness. For example, in the past many Buddhists lived in poor and underdeveloped countries, but they were able to find pure, lasting happiness by practising what Buddha had taught.
If we integrate Buddha's teachings into our daily life, we will be able to solve all our inner problems and attain a truly peaceful mind. Without inner peace, outer peace is impossible. If we first establish peace within our minds by training in spiritual paths, outer peace will come naturally; but if we do not, world peace will never be achieved, no matter how many people campaign for it.

I kept trying to figure out the relationship between Desmond and the guy in the institute with the numbers. Desmond is obviously crazy, and was "almost" a Doctor. He must have had some contact with the other guy.

The relationship of Desmond & the mental patient, is speculation.
However, Desmond told Jack, in the stadium, that he was almost a doctor, when he was examining his foot.

ok so according to that link scott posted 108 equals the distance btw the earth and the moon and 108 equals the suns diameter- is that why the 108 is in the sun in the mural?
I think that s symbol is a dinasour, is that what they are trying to imply with the trees breaking and the stomping noises?
Did the ancient Indians also from scotts link- look closely at that person in the mural are those indian feathers around its head and the arrro is that a spear or just an arrow pointing upward to something??????

ok no swatiska in that symbol but lock is touching the ONLY 3 lines symbols- that has to mean something
the symbol on the shark is different- it is still an octogan but the center is different- is that a fish? the one in the hatch is land- and I think is a dinasour- watch this play out to be like land of the lost!!! lol

I read in an interview that he came with that tattoo. He said it had special meaning to him and that was it and that it's possible that they could write the meaning in later.

geesh, I posted above but Im reading and reading into what scott posted that link and about the meaning of the swatiska- its a symbol of good luck. the strands mean According to the other school of thought, the first stands for the sun, for light and life; the second stands for night and destruction. Indians inscribe it on the opening page of their account books. it also mentioned that they worshiped the sun and the servants would gather around the sun- in the mural the people are around the sun and that person has to be an indian. It def means budist stuff- the swatiska is a buddist symbol for luck!
geesh this show is deep!!!!

Jack isn't really Jack. He's Charlie Salinger and he misses his four siblings! He was one of five and so that's what his ink represents
