Location, location, location...w/POLL

question for you all regarding location.

my dh and i fell in LOVE with a house upstate, it is victorian, huge, perfect.. needs nothing, within our budget, etc.

one issue, that doesnt really bother us, but may effect us in the long run for resale when that time comes.. it is next to a funeral home (which looks more like a house than anything!)

half the people i ask are ok with it, and others say they wouldnt even want to come look at it if they were buying a house.

would you be interested in it, or would you steer clear???

here is a pic of the house we are looking to possibly buy.

What a gorgeous home!

I have to be honest though- being next to a funeral home would put me off. I would worry about the traffic it would create. I wouldn't want to be so close to people in mourning all the time.

Beautiful house! But I agree, I wouldn't be comfortable next to a funeral home either.

it is not on a major road, it is actually in a residential area not far from a cute downtown area, but definitely a residential street.

Chat Icon it doesnt bother me at all, i am just worried about it hearing how so many of you do mind - would be a detrement to resale..Chat Icon

Re: Location, location, location...

i think if YOUR don't mind it...well that is what counts....

as far as resale...well i think that selling a house near a funeral parlor would be harder than if it was somewhere else...and yes a price difference

Hmmm I voted maybe. The house is gorgeous! I think if you don't mind and it's not on a main road, then go for it. Maybe you could get some more money off the price because of that fact.Chat Icon

I personally couldn't do it. But, if it doesn't bother you and your DH, then go for it! I think the resale may be affected only slightly (b/c people like me wouldn't buy it Chat Icon ). However, it's not next to a cemetery... which would really affect resale! Chat Icon

Do you happen to know how long they've been in business? Any chance they may not be around when you're ready to sell? Chat Icon

ETA: It really looks like a beautiful home!Good luck! Chat Icon

I was thinking the same thing. I think the traffic that it would generate would probably bother me more.

this is exactly how we feel... it is a beautiful funeral home, with nice landscaping - and the building is actually house-like, despite the sign out front.

they have been around a while it seems and i dont think they would be going anywhere..

Me too. Also, whether or not they had their own lot for parking would be a factor. It would be very frustrating to have a party of your own, to have your guests compete for parking with people attending a wake.

Otherwise, I don't think I'd be too bothered by it. Frankly it's be preferable to my current neighbors who throw beer bottles on my lawn and run through my yard.

they do have their own parking lot (not huge), but there is municipal parking down the block and across the street.

Re: Location, location, location...

I couldnt purchase a home near a funeral home. the traffic, the noise and just the idea of what it represents, the sadness, grief, I wouldnt want that around me or my home. I know you can have that with your regular neighbors the sadness/grief but its different with a funeral home. and I wouldnt want to see the "dropoffs" either while outside gardening. JMO.

Re: Location, location, location...

I lived in an apartment next to one and the only complaint was that there was alot of cars in front during a wake other than that there wasnt much of a problem for me.

I really like it.

There is actually a funeral home next to the house behind me. It creeped me out at first but now I barely remember it's there.

i have mixed thougths. ALL that matters is your happiness. if you LOVE the house and the location (regardless of the funeral home), then i would make an offer.

good luck!

Houses like this should be priced considerably less than the rest of the market in that area.

You might get a bargain. If you can get 40-50k off the house... maybe its worth it? Chat Icon

Re: Location, location, location...w/POLL

Wrt resale - for every person not interested, there will be someone interested (you're a good example of that Chat Icon ).

I would say if you're interested, go for it. You might wind up in it for a long time where resale is not an issue, kwim? It's a beautiful house.

Good luck with your decision!!
