LI Town Suggestions
So I think we are primarily looking in Westchester (Rye Brook area), but I think we should also take a look to see what's available on LI since our parents are there.
We both haven't lived on LI in a long time-- and I have an idea of some good towns, but wanted to see what you guys would suggest.
We want something with a good commute to NYC (under an hour), a nice town-- to have a little "urban" feel, good schools of course and generally a good neighborhood feel.
Thoughts?

Re: LI Town Suggestions
We just moved from the city to Rockville Centre for all of those reasons. So far we love it here (well full disclaimer, I'd move back to the city in a heartbeat but if I HAVE to be in the burbs, this is where I want to be!)

Re: LI Town Suggestions
that was actually one of the towns we would consider.. I am from Merrick and DH is from Old Westbury-- so we obviously know enough about LI to know some towns...
We were also thinking Huntington, but I think that train ride is kinda long.

Yeah we actually started out focused on Huntington and then nixed it because of the train. And boy am I glad we did because I realized after moving that we got SO spoiled with the short commute that even this 35 min LIRR trip is killing me.
The other thing I like about RVC is that virtually everyone I meet moved out here from the city so I feel like people can relate.

Re: LI Town Suggestions
I work in Lynbrook and it seems like a nice area. I heard the schools are good too.
We live in Suffolk for now because Nassau was out of our price range because of the taxes.

I second Rockville Centre. Sounds like it meets a lot of the criteria you are looking for.

I would say RVC if you want to be closer to NYC.

yeah, my mom is actually in Melville now and my dad is in Roslyn-- but MIL is still in Old Westbury. We definitely need to be close to the city though, so any further out-- I am not sure about.
What does a great home average (cost wise) in RVC?

$800k and up for a great home, but you could find something nice in the $600's and $700's if you look hard enough.

Re: LI Town Suggestions
I would actually suggest Huntington. The train ride during peak hours is just under and hour.
I grew up in Northport and I think that's a great area too and I would always just drive to Huntington to take the train cause out of Northport you have to transfer.

My friend commutes from Huntington to NYC. It's a great area to live in but the commute really is a killer. She's lucky that her job seems to have flexible hours.
I second RVC. I work there and it's a great town. The village is nice, lots of restaurants and it has a bit of an urban feel. The houses are also really beautiful.
West Islip and Babylon are also nice, but it's a longer commuted to the City. (There are express trains to the City. I think it's just over an hour.) I think if you were to look in this area, you really have to concentrate on Babylon because they have a huge village resident lot at the train station. If you don't live in the village, it's tricky finding parking by the train station (from what I've heard).

Re: LI Town Suggestions
i am partial to the seaford/massapequa/wantagh areas b/c i grew up here (and wouldnt u know, i'm in contract on a house in seaford)... it takes about 45-50 min to commute to NYC by train and during rush hour sometimes the train will run express. If you want to be closer to the city then look at a towns like RVC or Lynbrook which is sort of near the queens border and maybe a half hour ride to the city. good luck!!

Re: LI Town Suggestions
we're currently hoping to find an affordable house in great neck, which is really a stretch bc you can't find one that's about to fall down and crumble for under 850,000..We're also looking at Oceanside, where we are now, and S. Merrick. The commute from GN is amazing...

Definitely check out RVC. And an average home that doesn't need a ton of work before moving in is going to be in the 600-700k range.

My ILs are all in Seaford. We are hoping to upgrade to this area in a few years. I believe there is an express train out of Wantagh in the AM and at night, an express to Seaford.

I'm not really too familiar with Suffolk but I do know some nice areas in Nassau.. Commuting from Nassau would be around an hour commute into the city...

Re: LI Town Suggestions
The Port Washington train line is EXCELLENT and its a great area. I would've loved to live there but the prices were a little out of my range...
Great Neck is also the same line. Both are certainly under an hour.
I'm in Bellmore but I go to the Merrick station, and its 40 mins on an express.
I also recommend RVC, love it there.

RVC Great Neck Port Washington Garden City
Esp based on you coming from Manhattan and proximity to NYC by LIRR.

I knew someone in college who lived in NHP but went to GNS and said it was awful. The GN kids were really mean to her b/c her family didn't have as much money and she was really miserable throughout HS.

I think anywhere (even Queens) on the Port Washington line would be great.
and RVC also popped in my head when I read your post.

I used to live in LB. It's a great area, however, I found it to be very isolating in the winter months.

I grew up in NHP and went to Great Neck South. Its a great school. I was never picked on because I lived in NHP. Most of my friends lived in NHP and went to school with me. I guess everyone has a different experience.
