I should also add, Port Washington is a great area BUT its hard to get in and out of when it comes to driving. As for the train, its great because its a quick ride into the city!

What about Garden City - You can get homes from 500k and up (many 600-800K but you can find great ones in the 500K if you look)- depending on what you are looking for. Good schools. Nice parks for the kids that are residents only, nice community pool. Close to the parkways, shopping etc. Two train lines - hempstead which is a bit slower but you can also take the mineola lines (merrillion ave) which are very quick.
Rockville Centre is also a nice area, Roslyn has some nice areas as well.

Port Washington is nice, buy certain areas are less desirable, the area is nice, but it has changed over the years, go on MLSLI and research the school demographics, you;ll be surprised.

We are in Lynbrook (very South lynbrook) and it is a 35 min ride to NYC on an express train.
I LOVE Rockville Centre and the other posters were correct with there price ranges.
Nice thing about Lynbrook is the proximity to NYC. Taxes are high here tho.
