Let's talk BUMPERS...

So our nursery is set up Chat Icon Chat Icon well not fully still need to hang some art work & such but it is getting there.

Bumpers are in the crib--really just for decoration bc I love the bedding.

Mom and moms friend are over yesterday and i tell them how when baby goes in crib I plan on using breathable bumpers...(though now w/the no bumper thread we have yet another option lol)

They say oh these bumpers are fine we used them for you....

So DO people use the regular bumpers? What are you doing and why? TYChat Icon

Re: Let's talk BUMPERS...

Lots of people use the regular bumpers.

Not me though-not with the correlation to SIDs or suffocation.

No, I had them in the crib for DD until I brought her home then I took them out.

I didn't even get them for DS.

Breathable bumpers or bust!

I do not feel comfortable putting regular bumpers in. To me, they are like pillows and I just dont feel safe with them.

I will use breathable bumpers.

Re: Let's talk BUMPERS...

To each their own, but I could never ever feel comfortable putting something in my baby's crib that has been DIRECTLY correlated with SIDS. We never even purchased the regular bumpers for our son and we will not for this baby either. We had nothing on my son's crib, until he got to be around 5 months or so and started rolling around. Then we put on the breathable bumpers to avoid him getting a limb stuck or twisted between the slats. As our ped said (and we completely agree), the risk of SIDS from using bumpers is far more dangerous than any bump or bruise they could get on their head from rolling or falling in the crib.

agreed - I know people use the "I had bumpers when I was a baby and Im fine" and thats true for some but today MANY MANY more babies are still here due to the Back to Sleep and no bumpers campaigns. Its a common misconception that they are a suffocation risk - the risk associated with them is SIDS - NOT suffocation - so your baby could be sleeping smack in the middle of their crib and not be safe from SIDS due to them. They can always heal from a bump or bruise, you cannot ever bring them back though god forbid something awful happens. Its not worth it to me, especially when there is a safer alternative like breathable bumpers.

Re: Let's talk BUMPERS...

I have the regular bumpers in the crib now but the day my baby comes home and sleeps in that crib, the bumpers will come out.

I will use breathable if possible or nothing. I am not comfortable using regular bumpers given the information I have read.

To each their own.

I'm not going to use them. I think cribs do look nicer with them but to me it's not worth the risk based on what I've researched.

I don't know much about the breathable bumpers but I could see myself using them if I'm worried about the baby getting hurt or stuck in the crib.

Re: Let's talk BUMPERS...

can i share my BTDT experience Chat Icon

i used the regular bumper from day 1 to 13.5 months. when it came time to change that mother $@%@(*@% sheet every few days, I wanted to kill myself. It is nearly impossible to get the mattress out unless you take the bumper out which is a HUGE PITA. I used to destroy my knuckles and get the mattress out without taking off the bumper. it was just easier than taking the bumper out and then re-tying it Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

at 13.5 months, something made me decide to get the breathable bumper. i guess for the summer. it has made such a difference! since you can weave it through the slats, there is no need to take it out before pulling the mattress out. my hands are A OK Chat Icon no more bruised knuckles, no more frustration! I will never go back to the padded bumper!

also, for those of you with kids who take pacis or have loveys Chat Icon

it is likely that you will need something! paci's fall out without a bumper and when they realize they can manipulate you Chat Icon they push things (loveys, paci's) through the slats so you will come in to put them back in the crib.

it also revents limbs from getting stuck (which has happened to DS)

Re: Let's talk BUMPERS...

If I bought the bedding, I would be using the bumpers that come with it. But I didn't. So we bought the breathable ones. I used regular ones with DD and they were never an issue.

Re: Let's talk BUMPERS...

While I was also completely scared about suffocation with DD, I was also freaked about head injuries, because I knew someone whose son suffered a severe head injury in the crib. To make me more freadked out this time around, my nephew also recently fell int eh crib at 7 months, and got a brain bleed and huge fluid buildup that resulted in a two week hospital stay, two brain surgeries, and a permanent shunt in his brain, and there were bumpers in his crib. Now his entire crib is padded, which I also did with DD. Personally I think that if it is practical for you to do so, and you keep them in a bassinet in your room until for or five months and then put them int he crib once they can easily roll both ways, but still are exremely vigilant, it is okay, but you still have to know your kid. If h is the type to sleep smushed up against the bumpers, maybe bumpers aren't the way to go.

This is just my personal experience-- no flames please. Everyone will do whatever makes them sleep well at night, and everyone is different. I just wanted to add my experiences to the mix!

Re: Let's talk BUMPERS...

Thanks for your input. We had pretty much decided that we would take them out when DS goes in the crib and use breathable bumpers but some of the info about SIDS really solidifies it for me. Chat Icon

Ditto

DD has been in the crib since day 1 and we are using the regular bumpers. Have no issues about them, but everyone is different in what they are comfortable with for their child.

Re: Let's talk BUMPERS...

With DD I bought the breathable bumpers, BUT somewhere in the beginning (3, 4 or 5 months?? don't remember exactly) I distinctly noticed her hitting her head on the crib as she was rolling around trying to get comfortable. That freaked me out with her soft spot and all, so I changed the crib to the regular bumper.

In my opinion, you should do what your instinct feels is best for you and your child. You may change your mind along the way if you find certain things are not working for your DC. This goes for more things than just bumpers Chat Icon

ITA and that's why I didn't use the padded bumpers. That plus it was a HUGE PITA to change the sheets with bumpers on.
