landlords

I just got back from Florida and AGAIN the landlords are in my apt. They turn off everything including heat when we are gone. when we approach them they act all stupid like they can go in at anytime. They say "work with us". They said our thermostat was on 72. I mean c'mon is that really that high? Aside from that GET OUT! when we went on our honeymoon, we came back and they stated our wedding pics were nice and they were airing out the apt bc it was hot. I didnt ask them to. I had a few friends here with kids and the next day they told me they were afraid the kids would put forks in the sockets and the parents would sue. The woman has become obsessively nosey. I want to continue living here bc we dont have huge problems aside from wanting them out of here. we are not connected as it is a mother daughter house. No reason for them to come in. She also told me to unplug the fridge if I wasnt going to be here...c'mon now. I give them the rent on time every month. this is getting ridiculous!!!!!!

Re: landlords

Ummmm...time to move! That is ridiculous!!!!!!!! I am a landlord, and I have never, EVER gone in my tenants apartment without notice, and even then it's only been when there's a leak or something needs to be fixed.
That is CRAZY!!!!!

That is insane! Chat Icon

My parents have tenants, and the only time they go in her apt is when something is broken (and she tells them!) or when she leaves her windows open and goes out, and my parents are going out too. I mean, why have an alarm system if she's gonna leave her windows wide open!

I don't think your landlord can do that.

Re: landlords

Everyone keeps telling me to "tell them" but I dont understand how they cant figure this out. I think when I tell them is when we are going to begin a war. My dh and I were trying to find a home but didnt expect we might have to leave sooner. I cant believe they locked our heat to 66. This is nuts! It seems there are more apts then tenants, so I am not sure why they need to start this. We are never here.

Re: landlords

If it were me... I would have turned the heat down to 66 while I am away on a vacation.

Why heat an apartment that you don't plan on occupying for a week. Its a waste of fuel. Chat Icon

Re: landlords

are you paying for the electric, heat, etc?

No matter what, I think its very rude of them to enter your apartment without your knowledge. I think it is illegal, I know where we live, they are not allowed to enter unless its an emergency and we are not home (Leak into the downstairs apt, etc)....

IF you are paying for the heat, electric, etc, she has no say at all in what you do!!!!

I would be P!ssed too!

Re: landlords

that is ridiculous! Can you change the locks? I agree with Rich, to turn down the heat while you are away... but to unplug the fridge? You gotta be kidding me!

I would have a serious talk with the landlord.

Re: landlords

I could see them turning the heat down from 72 while you were away..oil is $$$ nowadays, but the refridge being unplugged while your away...I don't think so, just because your not there means nothing...your still paying for the place and should be allowed to keep your fridge on..what are you supposed to do with the food in it?? Tell them, if they want the fridge unplugged when your away, you want rent lowered while your away...otherwisw you have every right to leave on what you want ...you are still paying for it..there or not!! Put a new lock on your door..they'll get the hint when they try to get in next time!!!Chat Icon

I actually feel that if I am paying for the apt it shouldnt matter what my heat is on. I havent used electric, water etc... I dont think heat being 72 should break the bank.
In addiotion, this isnt just when I am away...in the morning "somehow" my heat is miraculously lowering itself to 64 so I am freezing when I wake up.

Re: landlords

As far as I know, it's illegal for your landlord to enter your apartment. If it's an illegal apartment you still have rights. If you are looking for a home, you could just tell them to stay out...you are paying your rent so you should be able to do whatever you want.
Yes oil does cost $$$ and it would be extremely considerate to turn it down while you are away, but like you said...you pay the rent and aren't using anything else for the week.
You do have legal rights and could threaten them with that fact, let them try to get you out....hah, hah
