Re: Ladies... Does it bother you when...
It does annoy me a little. I love having my husband's last name....but I never took his first name - I have one of my own. And I think it's a little sexist to identify the woman by her husband's name. But it doesn't ruin my day - I just think it's old fashioned and annoying.
My grandmother is very old-fashioned and I used to address letters to my grandparents as Mrs. and Mr. Her First and last name. Just to annoy her.

That's exactly how I feel. It's not earth shattering for me and yes, there are bigger issues in this world than how someone addresses an envelope to me, but it's just one of those strange pet peeves of mine.

Exactly - it's a strange pet peeve...like at a wedding when the officiant announces the couple MAN and wife....

It bothered DW and I too. That's why we made sure that our ceremony had "Husband and Wife", not the "Man and Wife" quote.
We also walked down the aisle together. She had real issues with the traditional "Father passing ownership of daughter to her new man" idea....

Re: Ladies... Does it bother you when...
No but it bothers my bff Lisa (Lesse) so my dh loves to screw with her and addresses things in mean ways..
I can't remember any off the top of my head.. but my dh can be quite funny.. or at least he thinks so.

Me too. I am a strong independent woman. I am also a wife. My identity is not defined by a name but by my actions.

I have one for you - my aunt sent us our Christmas card this past year (we were married over a year before) to Mr. & Mrs. Dean (MY EX BOYFRIEND'S LAST NAME)
Must be an aunt thing.

.. someone addresses something to you alone and on the card/letter it is worded as
"Mrs. Joe Smith"
as though you have no identity but just that you are only an extension of your DH and not your own individual self?
I can see "Mr. and Mrs. Joe Smith" - that's formal but to address something leaving out your first name entirely?
It does a little. I know it is proper formal ettiquite, but it irks me for the same reason you mentioned.

It doesn't bother me in the least. Now as someone said above, if I had opted to keep my maiden name, that would really bother me. But for me, that's who I am now.

Re: Ladies... Does it bother you when...
On our wedding invitation, since my mother was a widow who hosted, it read "Mrs. My Father's first name and last name". She retains that moniker until and unless she remarries. It was a great way to honor my father without the gloomy-ness of saying "the late....."

Re: Ladies... Does it bother you when...
I does bother me. In fact, I have been married for a year and haven't officially changed my name on any of my documents. I have an issue with my name esp. since I was married once before, changed my name, and had to then change it back to my maiden name when we got divorced.

Re: Ladies... Does it bother you when...
It aggrivates me to no end. At times it makes me wish I had kept my own damned last name. I feel THAT strongly about it being an insult.
I took his last name, not his first name.

Re: Ladies... Does it bother you when...
oh I HATE it....
I never changed my name, and I have a PhD. Both my family and DH's send me cards labeled Mrs. John Smith instead of Dr. Jane Doe
I told DH (who is in grad school and is about to get the exact same degree that I have) that the sh!t will hit the fan after his graduation if they begin addressing cards Dr. and Mrs. John Smith....
I give it a 50/50 chance they'll pull that.... 'oh honey, isn't it great? you're a Dr. and a Mrs!
