You guys should see all the babies... Yes, BABIES and small children I see all the time not in any seat at all. As part of my job I work with the PD on sobriety checkpoints. I have been at just about every single one for the last three or so years. I would say about 1 in 5 cars that come through with babies and toddlers do not have any kind of seat at all. Most of the time they are just buckled in or sometimes not at all and are floating around the backseat!!! It happens so often!! The babies are often on the lap of an adult.
It literally gives me palpatations. Like, as a mom when I see this I get SO upset. The worst one I ever saw was a women who had five children -- ranging in ages from nine months old to seven years old -- all five in the back seat, just floating around, the seven year old had the nine month old on her lap. And the icing on the cake? The female driver was drunk. Sometimes I still can't believe what I see at these checkpoints. And on the other hand, like the cops I work with, I've become so jaded. We just look at each other at these things and shake our heads.
I know it's kind of off topic but dang it bugs the shit out of me and I saw this thread and it reminded me.
Kids and animals - they get me all emotional bc they are helpless!
Question- when this happens, and let's say the driver is not drunk, what do they do?
Do they get a summons for the kids not properly restrained?
Depends on the boss on the checkpoint but typically it is just a summons. But one boss in particular (and I might be bias to this boss lol bc I happen to be in love with him  ) ordered the one we saw to call a relative to come with a car seat otherwise he threatened to impound the vehicle!  he could have, if he really wanted to, gotten them on endangering the welfare... So he told her get someone here with a seat and they did it! They had a car seat at home!!!! And they lived like ten minutes from the checkpoint so some relative came and the lieutenant who is a certified car seat installer installed it and allowed them to go with a very stern talking to  but how dumb? You have a seat, it was right at your house! Lazy!

It amazes me when people put their kids FF before the age of 1. Yeah your kid may be big (in your eyes) but their bones are still 1 years old. Drives me crazy how unsafe people are when it comes to their precious cargo.
These are the same people who won't eat a cold cut or sushi or take a sip of wine while pregnant.
Then the baby is born and it's like, yeah lets take an avoidable risk for no good reason.

I have 3 people iwent to Highschool with that posted photos of their children who are under 1 year forward facing! I think some people think if they go into a convertible car seat then they should be forward facing. So incredibly stupid

Unfortunately, many people are not educated about the ramifications of not rear facing a child under 2.

All I ever hear is excuses.
Oh my kid is too big to rear face.
Oh, they HATE being rear facing so they scream and that's more of a danger to me while driving.
If it becomes a law maybe people will open their eyes
Although, like DaniJude said above, some people don't even have their kids in car seats AT ALL, so I doubt they'd even follow a rear facing law anyway!

And if they are tall, their legs might be a little cramped, but a broken leg is better than a neck or spinal injury.
Graco ... It was not the weight but height issue. When your childs legs start pressing agains the bac of your carseat it is not safe. I was not about to pull my seat so close to the stearing wheel that my boobs press against it ... I am also 5'9" and have long legs ...so it was NOT weight but height. If in an accident he could have hurt his legs .....The pedi even suggested it. I was told if I did not breastfeed I was increasing my childs chance of sids ...getting certain illness ..sids = death ...The fear of God was put in me about breast feeding ...after a while I thought huh.....I and my sisters were formula fed. People ...do the best you can and in the end what you feel is best ....

Legs pressing against the back of the seat is not a reason to turn. They could cross their legs or bend their knees. What's worse, a broken leg or neck or spine injury?

No this is not like breast feeding. I'm sorry but you cannot compare the two. It's apples and oranges.
I was told breastfeeding reduced the chance of SIDS ..if you did not BF it would increase SIDS (Sudden Infant DEATH Syndrome and other serious stuff). Heck I see people buying all those fancy bumpers with all the stuffing in the crib because it looks "pretty". Or what about the people who put their kid in the middle of the backseat or no carseat at all. Do the best you can, relax and enjoy your little ones ... it goes by fast.

I'd personally rather risk a broken leg than internal decapitation. It's much safer to have them RFing until at least 2 even if their legs press against the seat. They can bend and cross their legs. Both of my kids were happily RFing until just before their 3rd birthday.
This is a safety issue. I don't see how it compares to BFing vs. FFing at all.

My older daughter is 95% for height and 90% for weight. We just turned her seat front facing at 3 weeks shy of 4 years old. Absolutely depends on the seat.

I am usually a "live and let live" type but I agree, your ped is an idiot if they recommended that you turn your child strictly for more leg room

my almost 9 year old just ditched her booster only after she passed the "5 point check"

I was not about to pull my seat so close to the stearing wheel that my boobs press against it ... I am also 5'9" and have long legs ...so it was NOT weight but height. If in an accident he could have hurt his legs .....The pedi even suggested it. I was told if I did not breastfeed I was increasing my childs chance of sids ...getting certain illness ..sids = death ...The fear of God was put in me about breast feeding ...after a while I thought huh.....I and my sisters were formula fed. People ...do the best you can and in the end what you feel is best ....
Maybe you need a new pedi if you were told all these ridiculous things.
I am usually a "live and let live" type but I agree, your ped is an idiot if they recommended that you turn your child strictly for more leg room

my 6 year old is in a 5 point harness and if I have anything to do with it, he will stay that way until he is 18 - lol
my almost 9 year old just ditched her booster only after she passed the "5 point check"
Wow. I would not use that doctor either. My DD is in the 99th percentile for height and weight and she will be 2 in Nov. That kid will not be turning around anytime soon. Decaptiation/ broken spine = DEATH !!! I don't get why people even argue this point!! This isn't about BF vs FF this is serious a matter of life and death for your kids! Be smart about it! My daughters legs are bent at the knee and she is fine!

Legs pressing against the back of the seat is not a reason to turn. They could cross their legs or bend their knees. What's worse, a broken leg or neck or spine injury?

The bottom line is, a pediatrician is NOT a car seat safety expert. He is an expert in medicine and health. He has a medical degree, not a degree in car seat safety.
Peds shouldn't be giving out advice about car seats IMO.
They generally just regurgitate the state laws, not the latest, most up to date recommendations .
