Keep those babies rear facing
I recently went to a car seat seminar and was told about Not to forward face before 2 and what type of injuries could happen. We were told about internal decapitation and that totally stuck with me. Today there is an article out of Australia about a little boy that was internally decapitated. Thankfully he has a good outcome but this type of injury usually does not. I am not trying to scare or shame anyone just trying to spread awareness.

Keep those babies rear facing
Thanks for sharing. This is exactly why kids should stay rear facing as long as possible. Nothing to do with their weight or height. They're muscles and neck have not fully formed and this is a horrible outcome.
Edited: thankfully this little boy was saved, but it could have killed him

thanks for making me feel ok for having my dd who is 3 rear facing... everyone makes fun of us and asks us when we are planning on turning her! id rather be safe than sorry! i cant even imagine...

And that's why my kids will be rear facing til college. Or until they hit the limits of their seats which at this rate won't be til they're at least 4.
I don't understand the whole "we didn't rear face past 1 and we survived" mentality. You likely didn't get into a bad accident! You got lucky!

I also strongly believe in 5 pt harness to an older age as well.
5 pt harness is ALWAYS safer

You can only do this if your child is not in the 90th percentile for height and weight. Both my kids had to go forward facing at bout 15 months. This is just like breast feeding ...they tell you what you should do but do not what many realistically can not do. Not your fault but as a mother of a 3 and 5 year this is what I see.

For larger kids I'd suggest going with a seat like the Diono Radian (the rearfacing limits are 45 lbs and and 44" in height.
The larger a child is, the greater the risk of spinal/neck injury, b/c of the increased weight of the head relative to the undeveloped vertebrae (they do not finish fusing until later in childhood).

"These findings show that before age two, none of the cartilaginous spaces have completed ossification. Those pieces of cartilage have the ability to stretch up to two inches. Yet only 1/4" stretch is enough to rupture the spinal column, resulting in paralysis or death."

Thank You for posting this! I was lucky that dd is petite so I never had issues with her outgrowing the manufacturer guidelines for rear facing. She was rear facing until almost 2 and a half years old.

Dd1 is in the 90th percentile for height and weight and we turned her at 2 years.

Most quality car seats nowadays have such a large weight limit, they can be rear facing until like 40+ lbs or something crazy like that - I don't think any child wouldn't fit. And if they are tall, their legs might be a little cramped, but a broken leg is better than a neck or spinal injury.

They're even coming out with seats that go to 50lbs! Graco is coming out with one soon and it supposedly allows for more leg room even though lack of leg room isn't a sign of outgrowing the seat. It's awesome that these car seat companies are making these new seats that will allow bigger kids to rear face longer! And I love how most Graco convertible seats are made so it's virtually impossible to be outgrown by height before weight.

Dh was convinced it was federal law because his buddy at work told him it was - I'm thinking the guys wife told him, but it had me cracking up! I'm still not sure how you can enforce it except when already pulling the person over or if they do check points like for seatbelts and sobriety.

No this is not like breast feeding. I'm sorry but you cannot compare the two. It's apples and oranges.
Exactly. If you chose to not breastfeed, your child doesn't face a greater risk of death. Or internal decapitation.

This is not the same as breastfeeding at all, and what exactly isn't my fault? i simply shared a story I wasn't looking to cause a fight.

Keep those babies rear facing
Thank you so much for sharing this--I think there needs to be more awareness about the developmental reasons to keep children rear facing until two or older. My dd is in the 90th %tile for height and at nearly 19 months old she still has room to grow in her car seat rear facing.

It amazes me when people put their kids FF before the age of 1. Yeah your kid may be big (in your eyes) but their bones are still 1 years old. Drives me crazy how unsafe people are when it comes to their precious cargo.

You guys should see all the babies... Yes, BABIES and small children I see all the time not in any seat at all. As part of my job I work with the PD on sobriety checkpoints. I have been at just about every single one for the last three or so years. I would say about 1 in 5 cars that come through with babies and toddlers do not have any kind of seat at all. Most of the time they are just buckled in or sometimes not at all and are floating around the backseat!!! It happens so often!! The babies are often on the lap of an adult.
It literally gives me palpatations. Like, as a mom when I see this I get SO upset. The worst one I ever saw was a women who had five children -- ranging in ages from nine months old to seven years old -- all five in the back seat, just floating around, the seven year old had the nine month old on her lap. And the icing on the cake? The female driver was drunk. Sometimes I still can't believe what I see at these checkpoints. And on the other hand, like the cops I work with, I've become so jaded. We just look at each other at these things and shake our heads.
I know it's kind of off topic but dang it bugs the shit out of me and I saw this thread and it reminded me.
Kids and animals - they get me all emotional bc they are helpless!

These are the same people who won't eat a cold cut or sushi or take a sip of wine while pregnant.
Then the baby is born and it's like, yeah lets take an avoidable risk for no good reason.

Question- when this happens, and let's say the driver is not drunk, what do they do?
Do they get a summons for the kids not properly restrained?
