Just some things to share with you about being Mommy....

Other mommies feel free to add (of course)

These are only MY thoughts and of course you may have a different experience.

1. At the Hospital – if you are ok with the idea of taking drugs than DO IT! Don’t wait too long cause GOD does that pain get indescribably painful!
2. At the Hospital – forget modesty, just do whatever you gotta do. The less you care about who sees your bare as$ the easier and more comfortable you will be.
3. At the Hospital – (I had a C/S but still 4hours of labor) Feel free to complain and whine to the nurses, they won’t know you need something if you’re quiet and I think they expect it.
4. At the Hospital – Once you get to your own room, TAKE THE STUFF!!! Pads, diapers, wipes, blankets (for baby). They sorta expect this, and man do you need the stuff!
5. At the Hospital – Lie! Lie! Lie! You NEED your sleep, TRUST ME! Tell family that visiting hours are X to X cause they won’t listen anyway. Tell them you have to take a shower cause there’s rules on that or something. YOU NEED REST. Every time I just closed my eyes, someone would walk in and it was infuriating.
6. At the Hospital – Personally, no matter how tired you are, I think its best you take those middle of the night feedings with your baby. They are quiet times with your new baby you can never get back! Treasure them.
7. At the Hospital – Go ahead and ask. Extra pillows for feeding or just sleeping, extra blankets, water, ice, etc. Go ahead, ask. My nurses were great about it!
8. In General – Take the freebie diaper bag (its all I use now) SOOOOO glad I never bought one.
9. In General – LOVE those nursettes (mini formula bottles) from the hospital, we took the last four on check out (should have taken more See #4) and they were a life saver when I had my medical issues later (I WAS BF but was forced later to FF)
10. At Home – the First Night is rough. Just is. *hugs to all*
11. At Home – You WILL find yourself touching, moving or leaning in on your child to see if their breathing. Its just a terrifying thing.
12. No, you can NOT spoil your infant! Go ahead pick them up when they cry
13. You will break the rules.. some rules more than others (sleeping with the child, stuff in crib, etc) don’t kill yourself.
14. At Home - I am grateful I never got a change pad, my baby is changed on wet pads and that can go in your diaper bag, in the crib, on the bed, sofa, etc. It’s that cloth, waterproof things for the crib, not fitted, they are WONDERFUL!
15. Buy Little Noses! Or nose drops
16. Not all babies like all formulas, nipples or breast milk
17. GET THE NUMBER TO THE HOSPITAL NURSERY! I must have called about 10times in the first week home with questions! What a relief to have them there!
18. We are not our parents. I love my Dad but raising a child has changed a lot since the 70’s and even in the past 10-15yrs. Advice is appreciated but not required to be followed.
19. I’m glad I never got a sanitizer. I got steam bags from Medela and those were GREAT, but in general I have boiling/scalding hot water from my tap (I mean STUPID hot) and that’s more than enough to clean.
20. Babies are resilient, baby acne, gassy, spit up, cradle cap, they will pull through, don’t kill yourself.
21. Call and ask your Pediatrician! Never be afraid to ask!

I couldn't agree more with everything, especially taking the formula and stuff from the hospital. It is yours to take, only they don't tell you that until you are ready to leave.

Thank you so much.

I tell you labor scares me soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooomuch!!!!!

Also, I have been thinking that I hope I will be able to rest and that my family and inlaws will be cognizant of that. I am the type that likes to be left alone and I thought I would be mean if I communicated that lol.

Some stuff I'd like to share:

Dont be afraid to ask for help. Friends and family will be more then happy to help you.

When at home it's amazing how a 15 minute shower can really make you feel like a whole new person.

Start stocking up on diapers before the baby is born. Newborns go through a lot of diapers in the beginning and this way you'll always have diapers on hand.

Definately sleep when the baby sleeps. Dont worry about the housework, the important thing is you get your rest.

If you have a c-section try to walk whenever you can. In the hospital the nurses had me walking around the floor and even at home I would try to walk as much as I could. It helped me a lot to get up and walk.

Also if you are still in the hospital and have had a c-section and you are inclined to take Percoset, do it AFTER you have spent time with your child. I nearly fell asleep with my hand in the isolette when Abby was in the NICU because I thought it would start working AFTER our visit. Needless to say I went home with an Rx and only took it once the first week - never again.

And I agree - STEAL EVERYTHING. They said it was ok to take all except linens. I took linens anyway. I have about half a dozen of those pink, blue and white baby blankets.

On these two points I'd like to add, same goes for the hospital with the shower. And I agree, walk walk walk.

I walked when the pain wasn't bad... just took Arianna for rounds on the floor. Pushed her bassinet for at least three circuits.. haha Chat Icon

Then I'd drop her back off at the nursery although they always stared at me like "You're really giving her back early?" - yeah 10-15mins early so I can go back and take a shower while the pain is still gone!!!

Then I'd go pick her up myself. HAHA I was that mom hanging out on the floor checking the clock and listening for annoucements "parents can collect their babies themselves or we will be coming by in the next few mins" I was at that door before ANY baby left and I had my Arianna before most others had their kids!

Still I won't lie.. although I LOVE LOVE LOVE my baby girl it was a huge relief to pass her off and rest knowing she was being taken care of.

That being said, I once took a trip to the window to do what my hubby and I called "Seeing her on Display" and saw her struggling and her little face too close to the blanket. I walked right into the "No admittance" area of the nursey and said "rewrap her please, she's uncomfortable and I'm a nervous new mom" they actually smiled and did it right away.. Arianna slipped (She loves to wiggle) and got that blanket in a bad spot again and I went right back. They still had no problems..!!!

Agree wiht it all!!! I have to say thos mid night feedings are really wonderful!!! The nurses end up waking you up to take your BP anyway.. so why not spend the time just you and your little one..

Also a quick add- If you have a c-section....

Take something for gas asap, even if you don't think it will be a problem- And the ginger tea they offer helps with that too...To me, the gas pains I had were far worse than the actual incision or anything else !

Definately take the freebies- Especialy the little 2 oz bottles if your FF (those are great !)

It helps if you write down what time the baby ate and how much- some of the nurses are pretty hung up on that and when you are groggy and tired, even if you think you'll remember, you'll find yourself doubting yourself Chat Icon

Also take all the formula EVEN if you plan on breast feeding. Plans don't always happen and it was wonderful to have that stuff on hand. Lactaction consultants will tell you differently so you don't give up on breast feeding too early but some of just don't have enough milk, or physically can't even if we want to.Chat Icon

Something I wasn't expecting was your hormones are completely out of control in the hospital and when you come home. I would cry for absolutely no reason! I kept checking the pamphlet they gave me on post partum depression b/c I was scared I had it but all the mommies I spoke to said the same thing!

"4. At the Hospital – Once you get to your own room, TAKE THE STUFF!!! Pads, diapers, wipes, blankets (for baby). They sorta expect this, and man do you need the stuff!"
TOTALLY AGREE! take everything, at a nurses suggestion, we emptied htat cart nearly every night, I let the hospital with about 40 NB diapers! And the nurse who discharged us gave us more! I asked for an extra paci and she came back with another 6 bottles, a paci, diapers, etc. We took the thermometer, its now the only one I use, the comb, etc. Also the blue bed liners they use to put under the moms..they make great disposable changing table liners when you are out!

"6. At the Hospital – Personally, no matter how tired you are, I think its best you take those middle of the night feedings with your baby. They are quiet times with your new baby you can never get back! Treasure them."

This one is a personal thing…don’t be afraid to do whatever you think is best for you and your DC. Don’t feel guilty either way. I had the nurses do my DS’s feedings each night and I recovered so quickly from my c-section and tryly believe that allowing myself to get sleep was key. Each Am around 6 they would bring DS in and then we would have 2 hours of quiet time, nursing, and bonding! It was wonderful. You have the rest of your life to get up for feedings, bad dreams, etc, if you feel you need the rest you are entitled to it.
As a previous poster said, about c-sections and gas, don’t be afraid or embarrassed to let it all out! You need to and you will feel so much better once you do!!!!

For c-sections get the biggest granny panties you can! You don’t want anything rubbing the incision for WEEKS afterwards. That irritation can build up scar tissue.

Don’t be afraid, don’t worry if you don’t know what to do, being a parent is a journey and you don’t always know what to do but you will love the ride!

Re: Just some things to share with you about being Mommy....

At the hospital it's great to have the baby in the room with you but the night before you are going to be discharged try to have the baby stay in the nursery. It'll be your last good night sleep that you'll have for a long time. I was so happy to have my son in the nursery and had the nurses bring me a sleeping pill. I slept so well. They brought him into my room the next morning at 6:30 all fed and changed. I felt so relaxed and the full night sleep was so needed.

If you dont feel like having company over to see you, it's ok to say so. No one will be offended. Your friends and family will understand that when you are ready you will let them know.

Their are no dumb questions. The nurses and doctors are there to help you.

Trust your instincts. Have faith in yourself.

Thanks for the tips! My sister just told me about #4 over the weekend. She said the same thing you said, 'take the stuff!'

DH and I were wondering if that was even allowed but I guess if the nurses encourage it, then it must be ok. :D

Definitely agree.

AND If it turns out you CAN'T BF don't beat yourself up about it, your baby will be fine with formula! I cried for days when I realized I couldn't BF I was convinced I was doing something bad for my DC!

Re: Just some things to share with you about being Mommy....

OOo I thought of another one!! BRING YOUR OWN PILLOW to the hospital!!! I did this and was SOOO glad I did. I used it during labor and recovery. DH was in charge of watching the pillow whenever I had to be without it, during the C Section and stay in recovery. It was SO much more comfy than the crappy hospital pillows.
Also, if you don't feel like bringing your own, at least bring your softest, yummiest pillowcase from home, and put the hospital pillow(s) inside that!
I love Chat Icon my pillows and was so glad I brought my own!!!

Oh boy- I agree with this 100000000000%

THIS was something I totally didn't expect at all!!!

ETA: The amount of people that will want to visit you the milisecond after you give birth will be overwhelming. Trust me. You need time to bond with only YOU, your new baby & your DH. Dont be afraid to tell people to wait a few days before you welcome any visitors. I was hormonal (BAD).. and was flooded with people in & out of my house since day one.
