Seriously? Since when is BLACK FRIDAY a holiday??? um since.... NEVER? I worked in finance for ten years, not once was black friday a holiday. I was expected to be at work. Maybe for teachers it's a holiday but not for any other professional that I have ever met. Thanksgiving is a holiday. Black Friday, not so much!
Almost everyone I know is off on that Friday. Most companies consider the day after Thanksgiving part of the holiday weekend and shut down. The only people I know who work that Friday are in retail, banks, or medical offices.
My DH is a professional and is off that whole weekend, including half a day on Wednesday. His company also shuts down from Xmas through New Years.
My point is, plenty of professionals are off for more than just the holiday itself...............not just teachers.
I am not off it's not a federal holiday....if it ain;t federal my boss isn't letting us go
my dh is dsny and has to be in at midnight on thanksgiving

Re: Just another reason to hate Toys R us
Employers offering OT for Thanksgiving
As a growing number of retailers announce plans to open their doors on Thanksgiving Day, criticism has similarly mounted among protesters and consumers, who are outraged that employees will now spend the holiday at work.
In response, retailers have been quick to offer their associates pay benefits and other perks for giving up part of their day to work, which in many cases has resulted in workers volunteering for the shifts.

Actually I was responding to Honeybadger's comment that she never had a choice about working on Black Friday. I'm not exactly sure why you wanted to place some sort of weird topic derailment blame on me but a lot of people started referring to Black Friday as if it was part of the Thanksgiving holiday.

My local TRU is the pits. I really try to avoid it if possible. They usually have only 1 register open and their workers are clueless. I ordered a bike for DD and it took about 3 weeks because they kept forgetting to assemble it. This year I am sticking with Amazon and Target.

I don't think any company just "gives" you the Friday after Thanksgiving. Chances are you gave up another holiday for it. As for stores being open Thansgiving. I'm not surprised. If people didn't want it they wouldn't be open. Same will go for Christmas soon.

DH's company shuts down for 4th of July week, Thanksigivng (Thursday and Friday), and from Xmas through New Years. Depending where Xmas and New Year fall, his company sometimes closes for two full weeks. If the Xmas and New Years are mid-week, like this year, he just takes vacation for the other days to get the two full weeks.
He still gets off for things like Labor Day and Memorial Day so he's not giving up any other holidays because of the shut down. It's just company vacation policy to be closed those days. Guess we are fortunate, they have a pretty good holiday shut down set up but that seems fairly common within his field. Many engineering firms seem to follow the same policy.

My mothers company has the same shut downs do to their inventory. And the last company I worked for did the end of year shut down also. And same thing, if you didn't save the vacation days, you wouldn't get paid for it.
I believe we gave up Presidents day or Veterans Day for the friday after Thanksgiving.

I guess I'm in the minority but Thanksgiving isn't really a big deal to me. Being open is a business decision and they must feel the demand is there
My hubby is working on Thanksgiving this year and I will be at the TRU. I am not American, have no family here to celebrate with and I will be shopping!!!
Out of all these pages, this is the comment that annoyed the ever loving shit out of me. I can't put my finger on it.

DH's company never gets the minor holidays like Vets Day, Martin Luther King Day, etc. But I'd rather he get the major holidays than a day here or there. His company also does a 9/80 work week from Memorial Day through Labor Day which is cool. They get every other Friday off which is nice in the summer months.
As for the shutdowns, the company is closed so everyone gets paid during that time........it doesn't cost you vacation time. In our case, DH will just use some of his vacation time at Xmas so we get the full two weeks instead of going in like a day or two before Xmas and a day after New Years. We like the long two week holiday vacation.

THats just it though, I don't think the demand is there to open at 5, or even 9 like last year. BF survived just fine at 2am for years. It is the retailers choosing to open at 5pm now which is RIDICULOUS. People looking to score deals go bc they HAVE to if they want to get the deals. Yes, they can forego the deal and not go, but some people need those deals to stay within their holiday budget and if they wait they miss out.
Its a shame they are pushing it back and not to mention, it just takes the fun out of black friday, honestly.
For me, it was having my sister sleep over on thanksgiving and getting up at 1am to go shopping. To be out at 3am, to finish as the sun came up and then to head to breakfast after. That fun is all gone now.
As much as I love black friday, and even did 9pm shopping last year, bc my family is usually all done by 7-8pm, I am NOT going at 5pm. That sucks.
this is EXACTLY my feelings. word for word - including the sister part. We are actually skipping it this year bc of the 5pm thing.

Yes, read my post,
I was speaking about company vacation days and what they deem to be a major/minor holiday in terms of having to work. I am NOT speaking about the historical significance of any particular holiday.
I'm not going back and forth, as usual..........you show up to
and make an issue where there isn't one. Ridiculous.
Have a lovely day.

LOL ah got it. I dont really shop specifically at Toys R Us and dont ever use their coupons. Was curious if there was something else affiliated with the corporation (ie. anti gay marriage etc).
I buy toys all over and never get caught up in the holiday madness and deals and steals. I love online shopping.

Not sure where you got that I said black Friday was a holiday? I was talking about working retail and how having off BF is pretty much unheard of, which is true, I never said I expected to have it off, however, up until very recently, Thanksgiving WAS considered a holiday and, yes, even those who worked retail had the expectation of having it off.
As for BF being part of the Thanksgiving holiday, yeah, sure, some companies extend the courtesy of giving you that day off, like with Xmas and New Years if they're near the weekend but on a whole I'd say it's really a 50/50 chance that a company will do that. They don't have to give you those days off at all.

I work for a tech. firm and we also get all major holidays off, 2 weeks vacation, plus 1 week at Christmas, and 1 week during 4th of July week. We do work with non profits for events, so these breaks coincide with that season as well(no fundraising events at these times for the most part)We always have Black Friday off

Re: Just another reason to hate Toys R us
I am a nurse, 2 years ago I worked Thanksgiving night, Christmas eve and Christmas day. I was fortunate to not work any holidays last year because I was on maternity leave. I also worked in retail as a 2nd job at macy's. We had to be in a 3am for a 4am opening on black Friday. 2 years ago, DH and I started heading out to shop the crazy sale on thanksgiving night. Last years we waited on a line hundreds of feet long to get into target at 1am for super sales, I was 9 months pg. We have fun doing it! It our tradition and we get good deals. I am not sure if we will be doing it this year bc we will not be home for t-day, but we may. I wouldn't think of going to a 5pm store opening, but midnight: definitely!

Re: Just another reason to hate Toys R us
I feel bad for the parents that actually want to enjoy the holiday with their kids instead of having to miss the day just to be online for hours to get the most in demand toys for the holidays.
I don't know what the big toys are this year, but I'm sure they will be advertising that they will only have these toys or whatever on that day to draw people to the store
