just another contractor vent. RIDICULOUS. But is this the norm?
My father was a general contractor his entire life (since retired) and never did this. Did times change??
-Hired company for a small home project.
-Was told the cost. They never asked for a deposit or anything, just gave me the price.
-Work will take 3 or so days, 1 hour a day.
-Get a phone call the day that they are scheduled to start the work and am told by the owner that the guys are on their way to my home.
....then he asks,
"And about the payment - When are you going to pay us -- Today, I hope."
.......after I picked my jaw off the floor, I said, "I was going to pay you when the work was completed......."
???????
thoughts? am I wrong?
who the hell pays for the entire amount of the work PRIOR to the full competition?

It is customary to give a deposit prior to work and the balance after work is complete. Is he asking for the entire amount upfront or a deposit.

ITA. All the work we have had done we paid a little first, a little in between and a little when the work was finished.

Nope. I would never do that.

They usually give a payment schedule and there is a deposit, and a portion due upon completion

Same here -- we agreed on the total cost at the beginning, gave a deposit for work to begin, and he asked for installment/payments as work was completed....

Especially for a 3 day/3 hour project. It's not like it's a 6 month project where he's got to pay a lot of salaries during the time. For a 3 day project, I would either do a deposit at the start, and a final check at the end, or 3 check for 1/3 each, for each day. Never the whole thing up front....

Typically, or at least from experience, contractors will ask for a deposit and probably some money along the way for supplies and anything they may be buying on your behalf. Then the balance is paid off once the work is complete.

Re: just another contractor vent. RIDICULOUS. But is this the norm?
i find that ridiculous as well. we've had several types of projects done and used 2 different contractors and i've never dealt with that. for "smaller" projects like painting, moulding etc - i've payed upon completion. for windows, i had to put down prob half for deposit so they could order the windows, the balance upon completion. our kitchen, which we are doing now... he gave us a written schedule of what would be due when. a small deposit, X amount upon sheetrock being completed, X amount upon delivery of cabinets, X amount upon granite installation, X amount upon completion.

We've dealt with 2 different contractors since buying our house. In both cases, we just had to give a deposit and then pay the balance upon completion of the work.
