Job ? : What would you do?
I HATE my job. Hate as in come home crying on ocaasion.
I was just offered a job I think I would LOVE.
But the pay is 9k less.
We could live with the salary reduction, but it would be tight.
The salary increases at my current job are limited to annual cost of living increase.
The salary at the new job would also be cost of living, but with the potential for more $ and more responsibility.
I feel guilty taking the new job b/c DH and I just bought a house. I feel I need to be responsible to us both, and I would not be holding up my end of the bargain, so to speak.
What would you do?

If you can make it on the lower salary, do what will make you happy!

Re: Job ? : What would you do?
What about some of the other benefits that could work into a salary? Life matching, health insurance, vacation, etc?
I think you should take the new job because being happy is more important then tightening the belt. No one should come home from work crying.

All the benefits are the same - I work at a large university, and the new job is in a different school. Same University, but a 180 degrees from where I currently am (in terms of insanity).

Is there any room for negotiation on the salary?

No. They offered me the supposed highest they could, which I think is BS, but I asked already, so I guess there's no room.

First let me say goodluck in your new home! second you have to do what is best for you i also had a job in the past where i came home crying everyday i did not like my boss he treated all of us like dirt. eventually you will get more money from the new job so go for it explain to Dh that you are not happy where you are and you want to move on he will understand. may i ask a question how are you not holding up your end of the bargain? you are working but you need to move away from this job if you are not happy. Goodluck i hope it all works out for you!

I think if you could manage it, go for it. Think of it this way, if you are happier, your DH will be happier.

Re: Job ? : What would you do?
IMO-The new job may be paying less money but if you cut out a few things from your day to day spending I'm sure the pay cut will turn out fine. In the long run it's less money but chances are you will be happier. I would sit down and make some numbers w/ DH and if you'll be ok then I would take the job. Good luck w/ what you choose to do & keep us posted.

Re: Job ? : What would you do?
I say go for it. Why should you be miserable. As for extra money, (I dont know your hours or your schedule) but if it does get tight, maybe you can pick up a second job for a while. Dont stay where you are not happy. Good Luck to you!

Re: Job ? : What would you do?
Awww, first of all congrats on the new offer! If you can survive on less money, I would take the other job. I know how miserable you are where you are, and you can't put a price on happiness!
ETA: That's kind of the simple answer, but evaluate for you what you have to give up...If it will be dinners out, going out with friends, etc., and that helps keep you sane, that's a factor too...Also, try to find out if there is anyone in the new office that is difficult to work with!

Re: Job ? : What would you do?
i was in the same situation as you last year (though, we didnt have a house, it was right before the wedding- which we were paying for ourselves). I took the job that was about 9K less, and it was honestly the best thing i Ever did. We were worried at first- but you always find a way to make it work. BUT, if you're unhappy- whats the point? you spend such a big part of your life at work, and if its making you miserable, how is that making the most out of life? I know that sounds easier to say than to do- but if you have another option on the table (as opposed to not being able to find anything else) Then i think you really have to go for it.
I ended up getting a raise 6 months later, and because my commute was cut down by 75%, i saved sooo much $$ on gas, and i go home for lunch- so even before the raise, i felt like i was actually putting away more money. Like someone else said- you can find those little things to cut back in your day to day activities that can really save you alot.
also- when you think about it- 9k/yr is less than $100 a week Before taxes... so it would really only be about $65+/- a week less... and you'd be a Whole lot happier.
Good luck with your decision!! and Congrats on the Job offer!

Re: Job ? : What would you do?
personally, i think your mental health is more important than money....there are always ways of cutting back on spending, or of making additional money.
I would say take the new job because it seems like you've been miserable since you started the job you're at now....
whatever you decide....good luck!!

You should take the new job. If you aren't happy in the job you have now, it's not worth the extra money.

Re: Job ? : What would you do?
I took a pay cut of almost 25K to make myself happy. It was the best thing I ever did for myself. Your happiness is worth far more than any money in the world and you will make your new budget work, trust me.

I took a $60,000 pay cut and don't regret it. I miss having the money, believe me, but happiness and quality of life mean so much more. Good luck with your decision.

Re: Job ? : What would you do?
Coming home crying? Absolutely not. I highly recommend that u do what makes u happy. Happiness is most important. You are only making yourself sick by staying where you are. How fun is it being miserable in a nice home. Do what your heart tells you. Good Luck to you on your house and decision.

Re: Job ? : What would you do?
Take the new job. I spent a year in a job I hated (but made twice what I do now) just to save money for my wedding. Looking back, I spent way too much time being miserable, and crying. That is no way to spend your life. Is the money worth being miserable?
Do what makes you happy, or at least what doesnt make you cry, and the rest will fall into place. In time, if your new bosses see how much you enjoy what you do, and how much effort you put in then Im sure you will deserve a raise or promotion
