Jewish Moms-- gift question ???
SIL (a Catholic) married a Jewish guy and they had their first baby in June. I want to get the baby something special (i.e. sentimental- not clothes or toys) for the holidays. I ordered him a Lenox Baby's First Christmas ornament, but thought I should probably send something for Hanukkah as well. What might be appropriate? Is there any such thing as a Hanukkah ornament, or maybe a china driedel or something??? Ideas or suggestions (and where to get it) would be appreciated. TIA!
ETA: SIL's husband, while Jewish, is not a practicing Jew (does not keep kosher, does not attend temple) so I don't think the suggestions need to be overly religious, if that makes sense????

I think a mezuzah would be overly religious..it's this longish ornament that you hang on the frame of the doors in the house with a prayer scroll inside of it with a blessing and if he's not practicing he probably wouldn't hang it up....
They do make lenox or that type of dreidels... I think that would be cute...hanukkah isn't such a holy holiday to jews as Christmas is to Christians so you won't find a lot of "keepsake" things as you do for Christmas..

i checked lenox's website and couldn't find anything chanukah related. I also tried spelling it a few different ways. maybe i'll try dreidel...
eta: just searched on dreidel - they only have a LARGE crystal dreidel and it's out of stock.

Re: Jewish Moms-- gift question ???
i dont know how close you are to Merrick, but there is a Judaica store on Merrick ave called Yussels..they have beautiful mezuzahs (sp?) there..i bought my mother some for her home.. shes not overly religious, and loved them..theyre a beautiful sentiment i think..
eta: i was raised "nothing" but my mother is Jewish and my father is Christian, and although i have converted to Catholicism, i still feel close to my Jewish heritage and am considering having them in the doorways of my childrens rooms in the new house as well...

Re: Jewish Moms-- gift question ???
sorry if I offended anyone about the mezuzzah comment...I just know a lot of my friends that are interfaith, and most of them don't have mezuzzahs so I just assumed they looked at that as an overly religious item..they do make adorable ones for kids, we have a really pretty one for DD's room you can find tons online!

Re: Jewish Moms-- gift question ???
sorry to pop in on this thread, but i thought i could help out:
check out your local judaica store, like yussels in merrick or zion lion in new hyde park or huntington.
websites like jewishsource.com have great gift ideas!
also, having a mezzuah doesn't mean that family is extremely observant. it's a cultural item and you can find lots of cute kid themed ones.
GL!

Re: Jewish Moms-- gift question ???
For something Hanukah related I love the idea of getting the baby their own menorah. When he gets older he can help light his own along with his parents. I am not religious by any means but we light a menorah during Hanukah. Or the mezuzah idea is nice as well - and you can get adorable ones. For stores, you can go to yussels in merrick or online. I think even bed, bath and beyond sell menorahs - not sure about kids ones but they might.

Hey K how do you feel about a waterford dreidel or menorah?
If your SIL is Irish and her hubby is Jewish that could be a unique way to combine both cultures. Not that they make waterford in Ireland anymore though

Re: Jewish Moms-- gift question ???
Jews don't really do keepsake things for Hanukkah. With that said, BRU has an adorable onesie that someone else here recommended for hanukkah. I got it today but it was really hard to find it.
the jewish museum
the source for everything jewish
The Jewish museum gift shop and the source for everything jewish catalogue have some really nice things. They have jewish star jewlery for children at the SFEJ or a children's menorah which might be nice as well. Then again, I saw the same menorahs at my home goods last week too.
TRU also sells the FP Little People Hanukkah Playset - I have this it is fantastic.
Alternatively, you could get the Rebecca Rubin American girl doll as she is a jewish doll.

LLadro makes a nice dreidel and possibly lenox...not sure. Ive seen some real cool yamulkas for young kids with sports on them (baseball specifically). Also, at my brothers dd's baby naming the synagogue passed out baby einstein books in Hebrew. Ive never seen that before.

yes! Here's a link to the dreidel link it's $100 on their site, but maybe macy's would carry it too, you can probably catch a sale. The menorah is more, $300 but would be a real keepsake they'd treasure!!!

Another non-parent crashing.
I think its a great idea to send something in celebration of both holidays. We are inter-faith, and I know how much I would appreciate that gesture when the time comes for us to have a little one.
My suggestion would be a child's menorah, that they can light every year at Chanukah time. I made one as a little girl in preschool that my parents still have.
Here are a few ideas:
From this site - http://www.traditionsjewishgifts.com/Menorahs-childrens.html

Another site - http://www.eichlers.com/ProductList/Holiday_Store/Chanukah_Store/Menorahs/Childrens_Menorahs.html

Re: Jewish Moms-- gift question ???
I am Catholic and DH is Jewish (reformed).
We got this mezuzah set for DS's Baby Blessing...
I saw this ornament today at a craft fair and recognized it from a catalog. You can do Baby's First Hanukkah...
I did buy DS a "My First Hanukkah" board book at BRU. Small and cute.
This is cute too... Baby's First Hanukkah gift set with plush menorah, dreidel and bib...
