Jewish Girls..
How did you pick your baby's Hebrew name? Did your rabbi help you, or did you look online? We don't have a rabbi since we are ULTRA REFORM-- we don't go to temple. We'll do a bris of course, and a baby naming-- with hopefully the cantor who married us.
I did find one or two sites-- but, there were not many names there.
If I have a girl, I know what I want her first name to be-- but, not a clue on the second.
As for the boy-- well, I am flexible and have nothing picked.
We are looking to do the initials H and M to honor DH's dad who passed away last November-- these were his initials for first and middle names-- both English and Hebrew.

Re: Jewish Girls..
We're still in the midst of discussing it, her english name will be after my great aunt and uncle, since their only surviving child is not married and there is nobody on that side of the family to honor their names. Her hebrew name will be after DH's grandmother who he was very close with and possibly my grandfather. She will have his grandmother's hebrew name, but we will have to come up with a variation of my grandfather's name. Most likely, we'll talk to my Rabbi about it. Any Rabbi (or Cantor) should be able the help you come up with a name.

I just don't want to wait til the baby is born to talk to someone-- I want the names picked. And I feel like it's premature to contact whomever, since we don't knwo what we are having, etc.

Re: Jewish Girls..
We are naming after grandparents, first and middle names so the hebrew name will be two names actually, the second is after my grandfather so we looked up the hebrew version of what it would be for a girl and thats how we figured it ou....

ETA-- can you do the SAME name in Hebrew??? Anyone know? For the boy-- we could just do m FIL's hebrew name and call it a day.

I don't think you have to wait. We're not going to wait until she's born.

sorry to hijack, but when we had my DS bris we choose for him only to have a first Hebrew name so his Hebrew name is the male version of my grandmothers (she passed away when i was a teenager).i

Re: Jewish Girls..
It is not Jewish law nor is it necessary to match initials in Engish in order to honor someone when giving a name. It's the Hebrew name that counts.
We actually picked them ourselves. We were both raised in Conservative shuls and are well versed enough in the culture to do it.
Abby's baby naming ceremony is next month in the shul where DH was raised and where he became a Bar Mitzvah. Abby will be named for my father and DH's grandfather. Their Hebrew names were respectively:
Avigdor and Yisrael
Because Abby is being named for 2 men, we chose a name that had as many corresponding letters in Hebrew as her first name and a feminine version of her middle name:
Avigayil Yisraela
As most of you know, I lost my mother in the middle of my pregnancy so we decided to give Abby a second middle name in Hebrew for my mother. So her entire Hebrew name will be:
Avigayil Yisraela Pesel
When we spoke with the rabbi to arrange the naming, he approved the names we chose.
Abigail/Avigayil meams "Gift of the father" Eden (her middle name in English)means "paradise"
Israel is self-explanatory
I have no idea what Pesel means.

Re: Jewish Girls..
I had my mother in law speak with her rabbi since we are very reform as well and do not currently belong to a temple, nor have a local rabbi contact in NJ.
We knew we wanted to name the baby's hebrew name after my grandmother and DH's grandmother which were Shlamis and Basha.
The rabbi came back with Shulamith Basha which is the Hebrew equivalent both names. I am not sure if we are going to use the name in full or just name her Shula Basha. Either way, I am not going to get myself crazy over the name since it will barely be used.

You can, see Goldi's post....basically my grandfather's name was Reuben, his Hebrew name was Reuven, so we're using the female version of this , where we confirmed it online I forget, but both our families have very religious backgrounds...My husband went to Yeshiva his entire life, we're by no means Orthodox but definitely a little more than conservative, whatever you'd like to call it ...sooo we had my grandfather who is still living thank g-d figure out what the hebrew name would be...as for the first name the hebrew name is after DH's grandmother, and we happen to pick an English name to sort of match it, but it does not have to at all...it could just be the hebrew name... My name is Jennifer Laylya My hebrew name is Leah, it happens to match up but I know my SIL is Pamela soemthing that doesn't match her hebrew name in the least....

Keep in mind that many of the generations before us tended to be more religious and sometimes Orthodox. Many of them did not have Hebrew names. Their names in English were transliterated from Hebrew or Yiddish.

Re: Jewish Girls..
thanks for all the input. I just want to make sure that I have the names all set-- because I want to ensure that we are honoring my FIL properly.
The H will also be for my grandmother, but because of FIL's recent passing, it's a little more sensitive.

Yup, and the "hebrew" names were in fact yiddish names...My grandmother and my own mother's "hebrew" names are actually yiddish names that you won't find in Hebrew

My Mom and my MIL had Yiddish names. And to be honest, the Rabbi who married my in-laws wrote her name incorrectly in Hebrew on her Ketubah. We needed the info for OUR ketubah and it was rather upsetting to learn that that misspelling happened. I actually picked up on it.
Typically, a non-orthodox Jewish person needs/uses a Hebrew name for the following purposes:
Hebrew School (Sometimes Hebrew nursery school)
For a Bar or Bat Mitzvah
For their wedding
And in death.

Leslie, can I ask...if the child isn't given a hebrew name then can they be prevented from entering hebrew school or being bar/bat mitzvahed? I'm Jewish, DH is catholic and we're not 100% sure (I'm not sure actually) yet whether or not we'll be giving our baby boy a bris (we might just have it done in the hospital) so don't know how that affects him being given a hebrew name and thus affects everything afterwards....

From what I understand, a bris is actually a naming WITH a circumcision and not vice versa. People often equate a bris with circumcision when it really is the naming. Abby is having a Brit Bat - which is a naming for a girl.
I think it would be best to reach out to a Rabbi or a Mohel to answer your question. I don't feel comfy answering that. Evnme (LIF member) is a cantor. I am willing to bet you can ask her and she would be happy to help.

Re: Jewish Girls..
Ours was pretty easy. DS's first name is a Hebrew name, Asher. We wanted to honor DH's grandfather in his middle name (grandfather's name was Nathan), so we chose the Hebrew equivelent, Natan. So, his Hebrew name is Asher Natan.
