Is this weird? Easter Related

This year I would like to spend Easter Sunday with my family. I told my husband that we should host his family on the day before - as I have Friday off and can cook and my sister-in-law works Sunday - Thursday - so it seems this will work for everyone. It is a pretty small group. My husband decided to invite his cousin from Philly as well. He recently went through a break up with a very long term girlfriend and is a really nice guy. So DH sent him an email invite - which he accepted saying he would come on Saturday and leave Sunday. While normally I would be ok with this - we have a 2 year old and I really think Easter morning is a family event. We don't really celebrate with this cousin on a regular basis but his family is from the midwest. I just find it odd that someone would think that Easter morning wasn't a special thing for families with kids. I don't think it's the same as Christmas - but the next closest thing. Am I off base here?

Well do you expect him to drive back to Philly that night? He probably will leave Sunday morning. I have a kid and I don't think Easter is a big deal for people with kids. I think its a big deal for people who wanted to go to church.

Your child is 2 - you can do the egg hunt or whatever you had planned after your guest leaves.

I wouldn't want to have a house guest on Easter morning either, unless it was my parents or brother. Easter is a religious holiday for us and we go to church early but we also have an egg hunt and brunch after church. I'm not sure how you can change him staying over, but I wouldn't love it either.

I think it would be more off to say yes come visit but you have to leave Saturday. It's family. Not immediate but still family. I have kids and to have an extra person Easter or even Christmas isn't a big deal.

He'd probably think it was odd that you invited him, and then expect him to make a 2.5 hour drive home that night.
I'm sure he won't stay long Sunday morning, especially if he knows you have plans. I also don't see it as a big deal IMO if an additional family member watches your 2 year old hunt for eggs.

It wouldn't feel weird to me, but everyone is different. If I invited a cousin from that far I'd offer for him to stay.

As far as your morning routine for the holiday, I would just let him know your plans. That way he can choose to go to mass with you or leave early, etc. If he's not a jerk or annoying, then try to go with the flow. I'd feel bad telling him not to stay.

Off base. Easter morning is like hardly anything imo but more than that, when you invite someone from out of town, it's kind of expected that they'll stay at least the night. Philly back and forth on Easter weekend will be more than 6 hours of driving, and that's if he is lucky.

I don't think you're completely off base, that would bother me a little to have someone else there on Easter.
IMO it is just the right thing to do to have him stay over even if it is a little uncomfortable because he is family.
Maybe he can dress up as the Easter Bunny in the morning Chat Icon

Being a single guy he probably doesn't realize it's odd. It would probably bother me but what can you do since you invited him.

I would never expect him to drive back to Philly that night. That's just insane. It's only Easter & honestly in our house with 4,5 year old we do a hunt & that's all. No big deal to have extra person.

If he has no children of his own he doesnt realize. Just reply back with that's fine but we have some plans in the morning, so we may not be around when you are ready to leave. Hope the kids don't wake you up looking for their eggs!

I wouldnt expect him to leave the same night. Honestly, my single brother stays with us on the holidays and hes not even awake when things happen in the morning.

This...

Its not odd Im sorry no offense, but I think you are off base here and making this bigger than it is. Sorry. I don't believe he means any thing malicious.

I mean Easter isn't a big deal to everyone. Its not to me. I wouldnt mind if someone wanted to stay over. And its Easter, hes family. Whats the difference to have 1 more person there?
I understand its a big deal to you, but how does it really impact your morning to have him there?

We don't have young kids (My SS is now 16) but for the past couple of years, my BIL (DH's brother) who lives 4 hours away upstate, has come down by us for Christmas, so he usually comes 1-2 days before and is with us Christmas morning. The first year he was going to be there for Christmas morning, I was a little annoyed (I wanted to have just our immediate family for opening gifts), but it's been fine and I've learned to deal with it. I would never say I didn't want him to be with us on Christmas and we just work it out. Not exactly the way I would choose to have things, but in the scheme of things, for me at least, I've had to come to realize that having loved ones around at the holiday is more important than having things be the way I want them to be.
And I get that it is different with little kids, but they won't care if he is there for the egg hunt, so, just try to let it go if you can.

I think when your husband invited him for the Saturday it should have been with the assumption he was staying until Sunday. Did you and DH really think he was going to drive from Philly to you and back in one day?
