always knock and ask, it show respect esp if fenced in. JMO. As an adult my dogs toys sometimes end up being thrown over the fence and I always ring the bell first.

we would check to see if they were home first .
Sounds annoying what they are doing I suggest keeping your gate locked and starting a ball collection Chat Icon

Re: Is this rude or normal?

When we bought our house, the kids next door were CONSTANTLY ringing our bell to go retrieve their toys. I finally just told them not to ring anymore, to just go into the yard and grab their stuff. Now that my kids are doing the same thing, my neighbors have extended the same "just go get it.. no need to knock" courtesy.

If there is an outdoor party or something going on, then my kids toys stay wherever they have landed until afterwards. We do the same.

It depends on your relationship with your neighbors.

It depends on your relationship with the neighbors, as kids we always went into the next yard over to get the toys back. The women was older and understood, it was just easier for us to run in and run out. But if it went to the yard that we backed up against we would always ask. Or wait until they threw it back over lol.

Just to clarify, the balls are coming into my yard. It's a fairly regular occurrence as we live on a corner and the kids play on the street next to our yard. We only see the neighbors once in a while and just say hi. We're not close at all.

I'm just annoyed because they never asked if it would be ok if they just came in and got balls when it happened. They just started doing it. I feel like they should have at least asked, but I wasn't sure if I was being old school or not.

Then this morning, since I had locked the gate over the weekend when DS was playing alone back there, a ball came into the yard and of course the kid couldn't get it. So he does the right thing by coming to the door, but he rang the bell like 10 times and then proceeded to bang on the door! It's just extra irritating b/c this kid is never supervised outside (he's 5 or 6), and of course mom wasn't there today to teach him proper protocol.

Honestly this would drive me crazy! We have a small dog with a doggie door and a pool so there is no way we can have unsupervised neighborhood children in and out of our yard. I would keep the gate locked at all times then when the kid knocks on the door, I would tell him he needs to keep the ball in his own yard (and this is the last time your retrieving for him. This should not be an ongoing issue. Of course it happens once in a while, but it sounds like the frequency of these occurances is way too much.
