When I was in school, way back when, we were taught that the proper way to address an envelope to a family was "Mr. and Mrs. XXXX and Family". You could substitute "daughter" or "son" if they only had one child. You never, ever sent it out "The XXXX Family".

I guess his aunt forgot my name as well as my son's.

Mr & Mrs XXXXX and daughter is the proper way to write out an envelope? I honestly have never seen this before. I assumed "The XXX Family" was proper.
What if we have another child or two? Then what do they start to write? Mr & Mrs XXXX and their 2 daughters?
If you just have daughters, it's "Mr. & Mrs. XXXX and daughters", same thing for sons. If you have both, I believe it's "and family".
I don't like the way it sounds which is why I use "The xxx Family" but the "and daughter" etc is the proper way.

I have an Aunt who addressed a card to us "Mr. & Mrs. XXXXXX & Son. It doesn't really bother me and I don't see it as weird. However I do find it strange that your MIL would address it that way. I mean she should put her granddaughter's name on it.
