Is it really necessary to
see your doctor before TTCing?
I went to see my gyn back in the spring when I needed a refill for my BCP prescription (and it's good for a year! ). Didn't realize a few months later I'd stop using them!
At the time, I just voiced my concerns to my gyn about the 'clock' since I'll be 34 this month. She told me that since AF is regular and all that stuff, and I'm really healthy, I should have no problems. She said I should start taking a multivitamin (which I'm doing now) and I could take pre-natals when I'm ready.
So...do I have a reason to see the gyn again or no? Actually now that I think about it, I didn't see a doctor, I saw a nurse practitioner.
TIA!

I dont think you necessarily need to see your dr. Just get on pre-natal pills

Re: Is it really necessary to
Thanks hon! I figured as much, but my sister was getting on my case about it so I wondered.
Guess I'll graduate from mutli vitamin to prenatal soon! My multi has 400mcg of folic acid so I thought I was covered but I guess not!

Not necessary unless you have concerns...Conigs is right about the prenatal

I don't think so!
I didn't see mine until maybe 6 months in, and she didn't really tell me anything that I hadn't heard from here already!
ITA with Conigs about getting some OTC prenatals and you should be fine!

Re: Is it really necessary to
I would recommend getting bloodwork done and getting up to date with vaccinations. I got this done with my primary care doctor, not my obgyn. I had gotten bloodwork done in 2006 but the doctor suggested I get up to date bloodwork before TTC. I also got an MMR shot. I believe rubella can potentially be deadly for future baby. I think it would be better to be safe than sorry.

I agree, my friend got checked out by her primary care physician before she started TTC

What type of bloodwork are you referring to?

I didn't see mine. I don't believe it's necessary, but I also don't think it would hurt.

Re: Is it really necessary to
I would get an Rx for pre-natals...
And also, something to think about: Your cycle has been regular because you have been on the pill. it's the pill's cycle, not yours. If you are NOT regular when you're off the pill (you're probably not right now because it takes time for your body to readjust)... but think about your cycles BEFORE you were on the pill. were you regular then? that's a more telling sign than her telling you you're regular on the pill... well, of course you would be!
just thought i would mention this because i was always irregular and now that i'm off the pill, i am back to my loooooooooong cycles and who knows what will happen!
GOOD LUCK!

Re: Is it really necessary to
Thanks Karen....yes I was pretty regular off of the pill as well. Now in my first month off of the pill, I got AF after 30 days. Only strange thing is, it's almost lighter and shorter than on the pill! Weird! Getting cramps and headaches like hell though which I never got on the pill.

Not necessary, but a god idea. Better to find out now if there are any issues you should know about. than later.
You could always call and ask.

Re: Is it really necessary to
Hey Tara..........I saw my GYN before but truthfully there was no point. She was like, "Okay......have fun and give me a call when you get a BFP". They don't really do much other than give you a script for pre-natals. When we started TTC again last year I saw her because I was having issues and wanted to see an RE but as long as you're fine they don't do much other than wish you luck!!

Re: Is it really necessary to
When I had my annual exam before I was ttc she asked me when I was thinking about ttc. I said maybe in 6 months or so. She then gave me a Rx for folic acid and said to start taking that and that's all. I asked if I should make an appt. or anything before I started and she said no unless I had questions. So just start with some folic acid and you should be fine.
