Is a changing table really necessary?
I'm finally registering and so confused because we will have to share a bedroom with the infant for the first year... and expect more questions today
We were just going to get a changing table top and put it on a dresser, but I wonder if its even necessary.
I have like 0 experience with babies, it seems to me that you can probably place a towel down and change the baby on the bed.

Re: Is a changing table really necessary?
that's absolutely true - the towel on a bed thing.
for us - we needed one, dave is 6'4 and sitting on the bed and changing Emmy is just not comfortable for him. He really appreciates the table & we use it ALL THE TIME!!!! She loves the thing too!

Re: Is a changing table really necessary?
I dont think so, I would just get a little caddy so you can keep the stuff handy and then a changing pad that you can throw on the bed ( waterproof, i think stuff would get through a towel )
We won't have one unless we have a nursery by then ( that would take some kind of miracle LOL )

Re: Is a changing table really necessary?
Nope, we always use our bed or the floor.
On the bed there is more surface area for them to not fall off of if they squirm, and on the floor, they are already on the floor, so no worries there.

does the changing pad need to be secured to anything? Is it safe just on the bed?

ooh i said that wrong, not the pad - its just like a thing that you can roll up, its soft like a towel on one side but more of a plastic on the other side. . . . the moms should know better than me - I use one all the time for my nieces and nephews
something like this

Re: Is a changing table really necessary?
I have a changing table and probably have used it like 3 times lol. When DS was an infant we used the changer on the pack n play since he was staying in our room, then he got to big and now is crazy to change that we already change him on the floor.

I think Tilde is meaning the changing pad that you usually find in the diaper bag. Those things are great, and I would def. use that if you were to change on a bed, ya never know when there going to pee lol.

We got a changing pad and put it on the dresser. I hope that is OK ..... it isn't attached to anything.

We plan to do the same thing - the dresser I'm going to get has a cabinet with shelves, so I will keep everything that would go on a changing table in there.

Re: Is a changing table really necessary?
My DS is also sharing a room with us in our small 1 bedroom apt. We did not get a changing table and are managing fine. We put a towel on the bed and just change him there. I did buy a sara bear diaper caddy which I love. I have everything right there so I dont have to turn my back on him.

Re: Is a changing table really necessary?
We put the changing cushion thingy on his dresser. For me it was a must have. I have some minor back problems so changing him on the bed/floor all the time would not have been comfortable. Not to mention things can get pretty messy and there were times I wouldn't want him anywhere near my bed but only you know what will work for you. I'm sure if I had to I could have done without it.

Re: Is a changing table really necessary?
As a btdt, yes, I really believe they are necessary.
Yes, I can change DD on the bed or floor, but honestly, my back can only take so much bending over.
I think they are completely worth it.

Re: Is a changing table really necessary?
We put a changing pad on top of a dresser. I think it's much easier to do that than change DS on a bed. It's better on my back and the supplies we need are always right there. Plus, as a newborn, he peed all the time during diaper changes. If we didn't get the washcloth on in time, it went prety far. I wouldn't want to change him on the bed and have to worry about changing the sheets so often.

I agree.. I use my changing table ALL DAY... The only time I change on the bed is during night feedings. Plus, sometimes DD #2 diapers are BAD and I refuse to change anywhere near where I might sleep. lol... She also has peed on me, not okay if it had taken place on the bed. GL!

Re: Is a changing table really necessary?
when we ordered the furniture, we also ordered a changing pad for the top, that gets secured to the dresser.
Also, our PnP has a changing table portion. Are you getting one of those? You can use that, if you are short on space.

Re: Is a changing table really necessary?
Everyone is different but I couldn't live without my changing station. My DD is 15 months old and I still use it every day for every diaper change. We live in a ranch which is why I use it a lot too.......no stairs. I just love having everything in one place, it makes it easy for me and routine for her. Her long dresser has a changing station attachment for the top. It can be removed down the road when we don't need it anymore.
There are pics of it in my album under "Nursery".

I'm not getting one... The way I look at it is my sisters and mom dealt without one, why cant I? lol. We'll be using the one on the pack and play for the first month or so though.

Re: Is a changing table really necessary?
I have a bad back so I couldn't be bending over a bed 10-12 times a day to change a baby. We just got a dresser and put the changing pad on top of it. It's perfect.

Re: Is a changing table really necessary?
We are planning on keeping her in our room for at least the first 6 months because of the layout of the house, so I think we are just going to put a changing pad on our long dresser and a caddy next to it with changing supplies. When she is older and we get the long dresser, I will probably move everything there.

does the changing pad have a belt? if it doesn't - then that worries me. there are times when the babies need to be strapped down....(if you need to bend down to grab anything - a diaper, something they kicked off the table, etc.) - you CANNOT leave them 'free' for one second because they can tumble right off.
when i'm changing Em - i never belt her in - but if i have to grab her pj's or she kicks the diaper cream off the table (she's QUITE the kicker) - i belt her in and grab what i need...otherwise - she'll flip herself right off.

Most changing pads have something that can screw into the back of the dresser to attach it and they also have belts.

Re: Is a changing table really necessary?
Necessary NO. If you have the space a great thing, 2 years later we still use ours for 99% of our diaper changes. But I know plenty of people who justed used a towel on the table/bed/floor...
So while I love mine if you dont have the space for one, then you can easily get by without it

Re: Is a changing table really necessary?
we're putting a topper on the dresser in the nursery. I have 2 dogs- changing on the floor would be a disaster! and def hurt my back! During the day, we will use the pack & play changer downstairs.
