Irregardless...
Why do people insist on using this "word?" It drives me absolutely batty.
Anyone else feel this way about this "nonword?"

Re: Irregardless...
It's one of my biggest pet peeves.
Not only is it NOT a proper word, if it were a proper word, it would mean the EXACT OPPOSITE of what people use it to mean. It's maddening.

Irregardless of what you think, I'm going to use it all the time!
That's interesting, Firefox's built-in spell checker doesn't have a problem with that "word"

Here is Mr. Webster telling you that you shouldn't use it, Linda...
irregardless One entry found.
irregardless
Main Entry: ir·re·gard·less Pronunciation: \?ir-i-'gärd-l?s\ Function: adverb Etymology: probably blend of irrespective and regardless Date: circa 1912 nonstandard : regardless usage Irregardless originated in dialectal American speech in the early 20th century. Its fairly widespread use in speech called it to the attention of usage commentators as early as 1927. The most frequently repeated remark about it is that “there is no such word.” There is such a word, however. It is still used primarily in speech, although it can be found from time to time in edited prose. Its reputation has not risen over the years, and it is still a long way from general acceptance. Use regardless instead.

Anything that gains common usage is a "word" but that doesn't make it a proper word. "Ain't" is a word, but it's not proper.
Also using "IRregardless" to mean regardless completely disregards the "ir" prefix, which makes the grammar fanatic in me twitch.

Re: Irregardless...
Ahhh, this brings me back to another Family Guy episode.
Three "non-words" or "phrases" Stewie despises are:
"irregardless" "a whole nother" "all of the sudden"
The Family Guy reference actually shows up in the pop culture section of wikipedia: "In the Family Guy episode "Stewie Kills Lois" (Part 2), Stewie threatens to consign anyone who uses the word 'irregardless' to a work camp."

Re: Irregardless...
Irregardless is lame. It is a double negative Irr- and -less...some berson trying to be pontifficant made it up. Yes, I made up pontifficant but it sounds snazzier than irregardless.

Re: Irregardless...
I am guilty of having used that word in the past. I had heard educated people use it and honestly assumed it was correct (and I am a stickler for that stuff!).
A friend corrected me and said it wasn't a word...so I never used it again.
Then I heard on a radio show people talking about the word and they said it IS actually a word...maybe it isn't proper or correct but an acceptable term.
I still won't use it though...regardless works just fine!

Re: Irregardless...
Another thing that makes me twitch is people misusing "me" and "I." I don't mean in the usual - "Me and John went to the store" way either.
It's when people misuse *I* that gets me. I have people at work, ALL THE TIME, saying "Jane is going to do that for you and I."
No, "Jane is going to do that FOR you and ME."
