iron supplement
Do any of you take an iron supplement along with your prenatal vitamin? If so, how many mg or pills of iron do you take? I will call my dr tomorrow, but was just curious. Thanks

Re: iron supplement
I was told at 36 weeks that I am alittle anemic. I was told to buy the over the counter medication "Ferro-Sequels". It contains 50 mg. 100 tablets. $22.00 at CVS. I never took one because I am having enough problems going to the bathroom... and I don't need anymore problems these days.
I plan on taking them after I deliver.

Re: iron supplement
I took it during my first pregnancy
I took the oTC one that says SLOW FE (i think it is the brand) I just took one pill daily.
With it i took a colace daily too- otherwise it was a "no go" situation.
FYI- you want to take it B4 Labor not after delivery- take a stool softener with it- because it is really important for your iron levels to be normal during delivery b/c you loose a lot of blood- you may be in need of a transfusion if your iron is too low during delivery.
Funny story- one week i forgot the colace- well this will be TMI but funny- my poopies were so hard they would not flush and we were in a hotel and had to call a guy to come unclock the toiled, not once, not twice, but 3 times!

OMG....I had no clue about iron levels and transfusions. Thanks for the information, but it may be too late. I am already 6 days past my due date.
Oh and cute story.....at least you were in a hotel and not at home; otherwise, your DH would be the plumber in a "hard" situation

Re: iron supplement
I was told after my first appt that I was slightly anemic, so the Dr recommended OTC pills called Slow FE.
I take one every other night w/ my pre-natals and the last blood test results came back perfect.

Re: iron supplement
I was told to take an iron supplement from day 1 and then after my blood tests at 24 weeks they raised my dosage. I have to take the 65mg ones 2-3 times a day along with colace. If you don't take colace you may have major problems. Based on your iron levels your dr may recommend a proper dosage.
