Re: Increased rush hour traffic
So I was thinking about this on the way in today..as I sat in 45 minutes worth of traffic to go 11 miles.
So I get that school in session means more cars on the road. And the first few weeks is worse due to getting back in the groove, figuring out a schedule and as PP poster said being on your best behavior- no sick days or vacation days - for the first few weeks.
But other than teachers- most people I know work all summer long. So the only ones for which this is the first few weeks of work are teachers right?
So are there THAT many teachers on the road at 830 am to make such a huge difference in traffic.
I find it just baffling!

Re: Increased rush hour traffic
Its not just the teachers - its also all the workers that service the schools (administrators, cafeteria workers, etc), bus drivers, and nannies. I work all year round but my commute is not impacted as much because my commute is from Exit 25 on the SSP to Route 110 so this morning it was only 20 minutes, but still - yes there are definitely more cars on the road.

I have come to the conclusion that the majority of LI must be teacher, students or work in a school

Yes. There are that many. Out of 8 kids in DD's daycare class, 3 were there over the summer. 3. Even now, if she's picked up after 4 she's one of the last kids left. I don't know of any other profession where it's the norm to leave that early. I get her early on the days I work from home (by early I mean 5 and it's only 2 days) and the traffic is worse if I leave at 3:30 than if I leave at 5.

But I wonder why it dies down? Like why are there more cars on the road the first few weeks of school, but not after that?
Or do people just forget how to drive for a few weeks?
So strange, no?
I almost don't think it's more or less cars, there are just more or less cars traveling at a specific times. Does that make sense LOL
people are working out their new routines. they leave early to start then go a little later when they realize what time they really need to get to places etc

But it's combined with the fact that a lot of people aren't taking vacations now.
People are more hesitant to take their kids out of school in the very beginning of the year, so the large majority of families with school age kids stay put for September.
So it's "back to business" for a lot of people, even people who aren't school employees.

Increased rush hour traffic
Vacation has to be a big part of it because the train parking lots are also crazy. During the summers there are tons of spots....now, its like a race to get one (people fighting for the same spots) and I have to get their early and just sit in my car until closer to the time of my train (and in my profession, half the people show up at 10 a.m. -- and I'm in at 9 a.m. - 1 hour earlier- as it is - so there's no way I'm taking an EARLIER train than I already do.

Increased rush hour traffic
I think it also gets better with changing of the clocks and then worse again.

I'm not a train girl at all!!! In fact as embarrassing as it sounds, I wouldnt even know what to do. Also, I need to know I have my car at work in case there's an emergency with my daughter in school. Just the way I am.
