from Suffolk to queens at around 5 ish...

I don't commute this way, but my husband and I go upstate every other Friday. We leave around 4:30 from East Islip and we hit horrible traffic the second we cross into Nassau County. Takes us like an hour and 20 min to get to the Whitestone bridge around that tiem.

I do that commute daily, smithtown to massapequa, really not bad at all. When I go from Smithtown to Valley Stream (western nassau, basically queens), I take northern out to meadowbrook to southern... again, not horrible.

How bad is rush hour traffic going east-west?
I drive from Medford to Rego Park, Queens daily. In the HOV lane it takes me 1 hour 5 minutes and I leave around 5:15. Without HOV, close to two hours.

Just a word of advice... If you jump on ocean parkway, it's a breeze from Robert Moses to Meadowbrook, saves so much time off of the commute bc you avoid 20 ish exits on Southern. It's a little out of the way but well worth it during rush hour!!
