Increased rush hour traffic
Is it just me, or does traffic seem insane these past few days? I go from eastern to western nassau for work... usually takes me 40 minutes to get to work in the morning (counting last year when school was in session, not counting the summer where there was less traffic) but these past few days it's been crazy... took me an hour to get to work yesterday and today. Was wondering if anyone experienced the same?

Re: Increased rush hour traffic
September is always terrible.
I used to drive to work in Brooklyn (I'm a teacher) from central Nassau and there were days in the beginning of the school year that would literally take me double the amount of time as it would in, say, March. It'll get better in a couple of weeks.

Increased rush hour traffic
Definitely due to school traffic but it will die down. Conversely, I commute east and the traffic was so much lighter now that school has opened.

Re: Increased rush hour traffic
But I wonder why it dies down? Like why are there more cars on the road the first few weeks of school, but not after that?
Or do people just forget how to drive for a few weeks?
So strange, no?

Increased rush hour traffic
I agree, but it does seem worse this years than I remember. And it is strange that it does die down.
It has taken me twice as long to get to work as it normally does.

Ugh, I do hope it dies down soon... I can leave earlier if need be but only on days DH is home to take DS to school. Thankfully my bosses have been cool about me being late, so far...

Re: Increased rush hour traffic
This is my first year commuting from LI and OMG it's insane. It did take us double the amount of time. We couldn't even get on any of the expressways- Southern State, Cross Island, Grand Central, or LIE. Waze had us taking back roads to Queens Blvd which then had an accident on it. I was miraculously only 1 minute late to work though. I hope you're all right and it gets better!

Getting to Queens from s. shore Nassau in the morning is a nightmare. I cannot tell you how many times I told DH that if he didn't quit using that freaking Waze app I was going to fling his phone out the window. It used to take us past every. single. school. between here and Woodhaven Blvd. You know, with busses and people dropping their kids off. Nightmare. Nightmare!!!!

Sometimes I think you're just better off sitting on the highway than dealing with side streets, traffic lights, stop signs, pedestrians.

I almost don't think it's more or less cars, there are just more or less cars traveling at a specific times. Does that make sense LOL

Yup. More people working. Less people on vacation. The summer is usually very light so once school starts you really see a difference.

I go from western south shore nassau to north shore nassau/ Suffolk border and the amount of cars on the road has increased.
The past few days accidents all along the southern state.

Re: Increased rush hour traffic
School being bag and people not taking any vacation this week of course are the main factors.
Also this early in the school year school buses don't have their routes down to a science, so it takes them longer on the roads which causes back ups that last a while. Things definitely mellow out a bit when people figure out their timing, and the amount of cars on the road becomes staggered a bit again instead of consolidated to certain times.

I commuted up Nichol's Road several years ago. You could always tell when the first week of the college semester was because the road would be PACKED and then it would die down.

Yes! Traffic is always terrible the first few days after school starts. I feel like the summer wasn't very light either (at least in the afternoon). I hit a lot of traffic in July and early August too. By the end of August it was less - which is why September seems extra horrible!

My theory is that for the first week or two, maybe the first month even, everyone is on their 'best behavior'. No one is really out sick, no one is really on vacation, they're all in work mode. Then the rest of the year this declines and people start to slack off more, leading to slightly less traffic for the rest of the school year.
