This is a horrible and sad story.
I find it completely unacceptable that this man's reaction to confrontation would be to take a loaded weapon into his driveway and threaten anyone with it. I have two children - I NEVER want them to think that using a gun is a good solution to a bad situation.
Mk. White acted irresponsibly. He got himself involved in a dispute among children. He shot someone. A teenager is dead. He stole this kid's LIFE, he stole his potential and he devastated that family. I don't care if the kid was a punk, a drunk and a mess - he didn't deserve to be shot in the face because he had beer balls on.
You are absolutely right

Posted by MrsFlatbread In Texas, I think you are allowed to shoot anyone that intrudes on your property if you feel threatened...could be an urban legend of sorts though.
I don't know about Texas but in Florida you can shoot someone on your property. In NY they have to be in your house.
He should have locked his doors and called the police.
As far as the teen that got shot, that's very sad but he put himself in a bad situation.
I think most of the south has the property law....
Anyways the teens where their to commit a crime.
Does NY have a hate crime law? I know in Arkansas they don't... The law would have taking care of the teens if NY has a hate crime law..

Re: If you do the crime.....
What i want to know is, why not just call the police if you feel a mob is at your door and going to do harm to you or your family?
That makes no sense. If you feel threatened, call 911.

e all react differently to things, and having not been there ourselves to see what actually happened, who knows if he even had the chance to THINK about calling the cops.
Not saying it's right or wrong b/c again, I wasn't there.
He had time to think to go get his gun. I have followed this story and supposedly there were 20 mins b/w when the boys came to the door and when the boy got shot.

I personally don't see why the father just didn't call the police. He son came home and woke him up to tell him they were coming after him. So pick up the phone and dial 911! This entire tragedy could have been avoided with a simple solution.
ITA. That is the bottom line here!
This dad obviously had issues that go beyond this situation. He had weapons in many parts of the home. So it seems he was well prepared for an attack and he got the very attack he had been waiting and prepared for.
With that many weapons and just waiting for an attack, he was bound to use those weapons one day.

I agree but maybe he thought he wouldn't be treated fairly by police, maybe he hoped nothing would happen, maybe he didn't want the police involved since there were some allegations made against his son. Who knows why he didn't call the police.
Well then he made a very bad choice simply based on what ifs....he doesn't know what would have happened but he faced a better chance of the police protecting everyone than what did happen.
If he thought he wouldn't be treated fairly by the police, he obviously has deeper seeded issues that he needs help with. So the police (and everyone else) are his enemies? Not good for someone to walk around on such a defensive all the time, doens't make for a good situation to be dealing with someone with such deeper rooted issues. Maybe his "issues" make him overreact (and maybe his son learned this from him too).
kids fight all the time. Doesn't mean it is life threatening and even still, call the police plain and simple.

the police should have been called and he should not have taken the law into his own hands.
the punishment fits the crime.
and, to me, the whole lynch mob/racism/slavery thing has nothing to do with going outside with a loaded pistol AND loaded shotgun and shooting someone without ever calling the police. that taking the law into your own hands and it shouldn't be tolerated--regardless of race.
I agree 100%. He deserves to be in jail...

Just think about how close this stupid drunken teenager was to the father.
Wow, that is a pretty ignorant and cold statement to make, calling a dead teen "stupid". You don't know if anyone on here knew these kids and may be hurting from this situation...

This is a horrible and sad story.
While I can sympathize with Mr. White and his feeling that his home and family were being threatened, he should never have gone outside.
He is a grown up. We was the sole adult among stupid teenagers. the proper response would have been to call the police and let them deal with it.
I find it completely unacceptable that this man's reaction to confrontation would be to take a loaded weapon into his driveway and threaten anyone with it. I have two children - I NEVER want them to think that using a gun is a good solution to a bad situation.

I believed you said it best. This is a no win situation for the families involved. Unfortunately no one knows how anyone would react to a certain situation until you are facing it. Hopefully everyone can learn from this situation and know that the best thing would have been for him to call the authorities and let them deal with it. They'd would have been there in no time especially if there was mention of the kind of trouble that was brewing. You definitely can have a gun in NY but you need to have it registered. Possessing an illegal weapon in NY means automatic prison time.

No one could be more stupid than a grown man who should know better than to get in the middle of kids fighting, with a gun no less, instead of calling 911.
Kids, white or black, or any color, do stupid and wrong and mean things all the time. Kids will fight, become enemies, say mean things to each other, maybe become friends again or maybe not. That is why adults are supposed to be the voice of reason, experience and common sense.
Easy way to solve this immediate situation. Tell your son to stay in the house, and when the "lynch mob" gets to your house, have the police handle the matter.
I think article is important in figuring out how you feel about this incident. To me the father is pretty much the one at major fault for so many reasons.

Re: If you do the crime.....
I work in a city where if people are coming to kill your child.....you DEFEND them and yourself. Does that make what a happened right...NO, but who gave those kids the right to do what they did. I 100% feel that he should NOT be in jail, and furthermore If this kid was only 3inches from the gun then he was far to close. Second......When angry drunk kids come to your house to kill your child YOU SHOULD protect them.

But can I ask what exactly did those kids do? Show up at the house threatening to fight? They didn't even touch his son from what I know of. So who really knows what would have happened. Not argueing with you, just bringing out the facts.

It's ok. I understand we all feel such horrible things when these things happen. So unfortunate for everyone when heated, tense situations like this occur and horrible things result.
We all feel different things for different reasons. I have been reading through these articles and it is all a terrible situation. So sad.
Sigh.

I don't think Mr. White had a pistol AND a shotgun.
he had the pistol, the son had the shotgun
I'm not sure that's true.

I believe the "kids" (two carloads) rolled up to the house, turned the brights on into the front windows, called for the son's "nig ger ***" and threatened to kill him. Oh, this was after they made up a fake myspace account using his photo and name and made rape threats to a girl.

I understand you're point, but she is entitled to her opinion no matter what anybody thinks. If people who knew that teen are on here then they should fm her about how they feel. You think it's ignorant, and you're entitled to that, but others may not feel that way. It is an open forum for opinions....JMHO
