this story is pretty sad on many levels. Regardless of color, a young teenager is dead at the hands of a gun wielding man. The punishment fits the crime in this case.

What happened to protecting your home and your family....while I don't agree that the father should have (accidentally) shot the intruder, he does have a right to protect his family and his PROPERTY. That boy and his friends should not have been there.

while I agree, this is not Texas. The boys, were boys and he is a grown man, if he felt threatened and needed to protect his property, he should have contacted the police.

I'm confused, what's the difference between New York and Texas?
We all react differently to things, and having not been there ourselves to see what actually happened, who knows if he even had the chance to THINK about calling the cops.
Not saying it's right or wrong b/c again, I wasn't there.

In Texas, I think you are allowed to shoot anyone that intrudes on your property if you feel threatened...could be an urban legend of sorts though.
ANd you are right we were not there, so we cannot speculate. But why did he have a loaded gun in his house, and if it wasn't loaded he had enough time to load it before shooting the boy? If the last part is true, he would have had enough time to dial 911. Just a thought...

Re: If you do the crime.....
This whole story is quite sad.Two families lives are forever altered by one tragic event. The thing is these young men went to that house to cause trouble to what extent is anyones guess??? Since noone knows but the young men themselves. The father was simply protecting his family and yes some of the dads reaction was based on his HISTORY we all act out of our history and in this mans case slavery and racism has a huge impact on his reactions and to the way he veiws this world. I honestly feel the dad was simply protecting his loved ones and should be free.

"Cicciaro, who had a blood-alcohol reading above the legal limit for driving, was just 3 inches from the pistol when he was shot in the face, a medical examiner testified."
Just think about how close this stupid drunken teenager was to the father.

I personally don't see why the father just didn't call the police. He son came home and woke him up to tell him they were coming after him. So pick up the phone and dial 911! This entire tragedy could have been avoided with a simple solution.

I agree but maybe he thought he wouldn't be treated fairly by police, maybe he hoped nothing would happen, maybe he didn't want the police involved since there were some allegations made against his son. Who knows why he didn't call the police.

He doesn't have a right to protect his property. A person cannot use deadly force to protect property (although I think Texas is an exception to this rule).

the police should have been called and he should not have taken the law into his own hands.
the punishment fits the crime.
and, to me, the whole lynch mob/racism/slavery thing has nothing to do with going outside with a loaded pistol AND loaded shotgun and shooting someone without ever calling the police. that taking the law into your own hands and it shouldn't be tolerated--regardless of race.

Re: If you do the crime.....
I have been following this story since the incident first occurred. I think it is so tragic on so many levels.
It is awful that African-Americans still have to endure the racism and hatred that was an absolute factor in this case. The son's identity was used in a disgusting hoax which spurred the entire mess. I am sure he was chosen because he was the sole black friend in a larger group of teens.
Mr. White was convicted of manslaughter in the second degree, which carries a maximum sentence of fifteen years. The least he could get is five.
He will probably appeal the conviction being that they jury was pushed to a verdict by the judge and the fact that they were tainted by an emotional stenographer yesterday afternoon.
I wanted to post something about this earlier, but decided against it as it is so emotionally charged.
All this case really does is highlight that there are still horrible racial tensions that will most likely be worsened on LI because of this case.

Re: If you do the crime.....
This is a horrible and sad story.
While I can sympathize with Mr. White and his feeling that his home and family were being threatened, he should never have gone outside.
He is a grown up. We was the sole adult among stupid teenagers. the proper response would have been to call the police and let them deal with it.
I find it completely unacceptable that this man's reaction to confrontation would be to take a loaded weapon into his driveway and threaten anyone with it. I have two children - I NEVER want them to think that using a gun is a good solution to a bad situation.
Mk. White acted irresponsibly. He got himself involved in a dispute among children. He shot someone. A teenager is dead. He stole this kid's LIFE, he stole his potential and he devastated that family. I don't care if the kid was a punk, a drunk and a mess - he didn't deserve to be shot in the face because he had beer balls on.

I read all the stories in the papers today...
my question is - what about the mother who let these underage kids drink in the house???
if they were sober, they may not have threatened anyone.
i dont think either side is 100% right or wrong..its a bad situation for everyone

I don't know about Texas but in Florida you can shoot someone on your property. In NY they have to be in your house.
He should have locked his doors and called the police.
As far as the teen that got shot, that's very sad but he put himself in a bad situation.
