If the invite says BLACK TIE

does it mean that men can ONLY wear tuxes? Can they get away with a suit?

I think a black suit with a black tie would be ok. But, I'm not exactly part of the fashion forward.

Yes black suit.. I have to say mostly everyone will be in a tux.. But that should never ever bother you..

I have to say I disagree with most of the responses to this and I don't undersand them either. I have always understood black tie to mean tuxedo and I don't see how that could mean a suit. If people take "black tie" to mean suit then I don't see why it's necessary to write black tie. To those who answered dark suit I wonder what do your SO's or male family members and friends wear to weddings that are not black tie? they don't wear a suit ordinarily? I have always taken black tie to indicate that the bride and groom want their wedding to be extaordinarily formal meaning more so that would be the norm. And maybe I'm in the minority but I would think the norm is to wear a suit.

I agree with the posters that said tux only. If it says black tie optional, that would be the only time I would even consider a suit. Black tie is a tux as far as I'm concerned.

Ok I just went and looked at all my wedding pictures and some others of Formal events I have been to. Not everyone had a tux on but yet they were dressed very Formally. Not every woman had a long gown on either but she was just as formal looking as everyone in gowns, My wedding was black tie. So I really think black tie means formal not necessarily A Tux...

Unless they are giving out academy awards at this gala, I think suit is fine.

We have been invited to 2 of them and luckily DH was in bridal party for one of them and he could not make the 2nd one. Renting a tux is costly!

I did research on this a bit ago because DH was invited to an awards ceremony where is stated Back Tie event. For black tie events you are to wear a black tux. If it states black tie optional you can wear a black suit, french cut shirt with a black silk tie. If you do a search you'll find a specific detail on how to dress men for this event. I find it quite funny
Woman don't have to wear ball gowns, just something below the knee. but really it doesn't matter.

I would never expect DH to rent a tux for a wedding unless he was in it. He has beautiful designer suits and he would wear a dark one with a white shirt and a beautiful tie in the gray family, possibly a vest as well.

I think black tie means tux. I wrote black tie optional on my invites and people wore both. black tie i believe is reserved for tuxes only.

Black tie means tux. Black tie optional means you can wear a suit. Never heard of anything otherwise. You can always ask if unsure, but to just show up in a suit when it is listed as black tie is not cool. Sorry.

I agree with many of the other posters-- Black Tie means wear a tux. However, if you don't have your own, or don't want to rent one-- you can "get away with" a dark suit.

You can get a pretty inexpensive tux if you buy one at Syms or something-- you will certainly get a lot of mileage from it. In the long run, it's cheaper than renting one every time you need one.

I had a black tie wedding to avoid people dressing poorly. Oh yes, some grown men dress poorly and some women dress like tramps. I have seen men show up at weddings with no tie and without having tucked in their shirts and some women who look like street walkers.

I'd say about 90% of our male guests wore tuxedos and only one woman who could have made a more appropriate choice - that was only because she was someone's date and he had to pin up her dress because she was falling out of it. In the video, you can see how she almost "lost em" when she went to catch the bouquet.

I knew everyone wouldnt wear ballgowns and tuxedos. I wasn't about to kick anyone out at the door.
