In all honesty (and please...I don't want to be flamed for this...), I think that's part of the reason I can't stand Long Island anymore. Here more than anywhere else, it seems it's all about "keeping up with the Joneses"...I mean, I have to laugh when I see a Lexus or an Infiniti or something more expensive pulling into the driveway of a tiny little house. Just makes you think, as long as you look good while you're driving, right? 
When I worked at the middle school, I was just astounded by the number of girls who were carrying around REAL coach purses. Uh, I'm almost 27 and I've never had one!!! What does a 13 year old girl need with a $300 purse? And then I realized...their parents pull up in their fancy cars nice and early, and sit out there, waiting to be noticed. The adults are almost worse than the kids.
Sorry, guess this was kind of a rant...but it's just gotten ridiculous here.

what makes me  , is when (in the city) you see people with all the name brand clothes and accessories to go home to the projects.

I'm not going to "flame you"... I am going to agree 100%!! I live out in the "Hamptons" and it DISGUSTS me what happens here in a few weeks. I used to own a store on Main Street and I can't even tell you what's become of East Hampton town 
People who have to compete, or "keep up with the Jones'", like you said, make me sick. I definitely think that they're lacking in something. It's sad really that people think material things make them the person they are. People who are always chasing after "the best" are missing out on SO much of life.
(I could go on...)

No matter how you slice it, people who feel the need to compete are unhappy with some aspect of their life. Those that are genuinely happy with their life, dont spend their time worrying about what others have.
If you're constantly looking at everyone else's life, it's because some part of your life isn't where you want it to be and therefore you become envious of others who have those certain things.
It's quite sad...

Oh i disagree. I know a few people who have it and they love to boast about it. That right there is insecurity when they need to build themselves up to everyone. As if the amount of money you have makes you a better person.

maybe people like to have small houses in nice cars?? maybe they dont want to clean a big house!

I hardly see having a luxury vehicle and a small home as boasting or keeping up with the Joneses. People buy those vehicles because they truly like them. We spend a lot of time in our vehicles, wouldn't you want something you love to be in?? Some people have a minimal mortgage (BabyBoomers) and plenty of disposable income...a Lexus or Mercedes isn't going to break their bank.

I agree- I feel like it goes along with the logic of you can't have a nice car and rent
live and let live- if all someone wants to talk about it how much money they have- don't talk to them anymore!
If that's all the have to offer- then it shouldn't be too hard

Also re: the parents pulling up early to pick up their kids to show off their cars. Do you really think that's why they're there early?
How about to check out their kids? their kids interactions with their friends?
How about so their kid isn't sitting around waiting to be picked up?
I agree that for people that brag, there are self esteem issues.
There is a difference between bragging & enthusiastically loving their new car/house. I know plenty of people that scrimped & saved and will invite me over to show off their new house/toy.
I guess the issue really is that bragging is also in the eye of the beholder.

Not for nothing....but driving a luxury isn't that hard to do anymore. With the leasing programs they have these days, you can get just about any car you want.
My land lord drives and Aston Martin (I mean you can't lease that car) and a Mercedes and and Toyota FJ. They are easily $240,000 combined. But he has a modest house. He also owns his own business and owns 9 apartments that he rents.
He could easily buy a bigger house, but he likes his "toys". They make him happy. And he has his own office and wears t-shirts and shorts/jeans to work everyday. (His office is below my apartment)
If he wrong for having a "normal" house, yet an extravigant car???

I could be wrong, but i think the OP is not saying every person who has a luxury car and a small house is living above their means....but we all know that those people are out there. And not every mom at school is there early to show off their car, but you know some moms are.
I think as a whole americans are very materialistic. I think it goes on everywhere, but i think it is especially prevelant on LI b/c of the number of wealthy people that live here and b/c of our proximity to NYC.
It is easy to get caught up in it, but at the end of the day it's just stuff, so it really doesn't matter. Some people buy stuff to fill a void, which is sad. Some people buy it b/c they like it and can afford it....so all you can do is worry about yourself!
