Posted by bicosi Another thing that helps is to talk to your OB and ask them about their perenial massage. I came to find out with my second delivery (never thought to inquire about it when I was preggo the first time) that my OB had a 98% success rate at not having to perform an epis and no tearing because of the peri massage that she performs when you're in labor.
Ok, I'm a dope and so embarrassed to ask this, but what is this massage you mentioned???
Not a dope AT ALL! I didn't know about this either. But my OB massaged and stretched my vagnal opening throughout my entire labor and as I pushed she continued to massage it and it helped stretch it out and prevented my needing an epis and I didn't tear. I didn't feel her doing anything either (I had an epidural)
ohhhhh. Thank you. Is this something that you had to ask for, or is this something that they just know to do?

Re: I know this may sound petty....
all i can say its gotta be better than ripping. I had a covering doctor deliver my dd and he let me rip both top and bottom.. Now that hurt.

I would def talk to your OB about it and see what they do. I'm not sure what is standard or what is not.

I had this done too and while I didn't tear or need to be cut it hurt like HE!! while she was doing it . They pretty much let my epi wear off so I would be able to push so I felt a lot. She would s t r e t c h the cr@p out of me between pushing....so much so that I would rather push than be stretched . In the end I'm glad she did it b/c I didn't have any stitches but recovery was still hard b/c everything down there was so swollen.

Nothing is worse than having both!
Just wanted to add it's not a big deal when it happens it's just the recovery that kills.

Re: I know this may sound petty....
the massage doesn't always work. i'm living proof.
honestly, the episiotomy was no big deal. i didn't feel it and it's healing beautifully. when i think back to my labor and delivery, i wouldn't even consider not getting it and ripping. mine was necessary to get my baby out.

I don't think it's petty at all. Who wants their parts down there cut open???? If deliver vaginally, I am terrified of it too.
