I am constantly worried about a home invasion...

Everytime DH comes home late (like tonight) I obsess over the reality of a home invasion. I'm overly cautious, I know...and I read a lot of true crime novels, but I feel like it's bound to happen to us (we live in a nice house in a nice neighborhood....not that it can't happen anywhere, but I feel like we might be targets)...

We have an alarm system, but from the story I read earlier on here that doesn't seem to do much good. I'm wondering if anyone knows anything about panic buttons (like they have at banks)...how much are they for homes?? I just feel very vulnerable with a baby here alone and we've had a lot of workers at our house recently (getting our basement finished) and I don't like the idea of random guys becoming familiar with our house and the layout.

Anyway, I feel that it's better to be paranoid about this stuff then to wait until after something happens. What can I get installed that will make me feel safer? I know that if they really want to get in, they will....but isn't there something out there that can give me peace of mind?

You can call your alarm company and ask about the panic buttons. I am sure they can install them. Do you have outdoor lights around your home? That may deter ppl bc they can be seen if trying to break in. Are you friends with your neighbors? Do they watch out for you? I don't answer the door at night if I am alone, sometimes even during the day.

I worry about it too especially since we don't have a great lock on the front door.

And bc I am a weirdo, I always try to think of a good hiding place in the house in case I hear someone trying to get in. Chat Icon

If I am home alone, I also tend to leave more lights on in the house.

Re: I am constantly worried about a home invasion...

We have a panic button on our keychain for the alarm....DH accidentally hit it once and our alarm company contacted the police right away...they were at the house in two minutes. There is also a panic button on the keypad on the wall.

We have a back up alarm system too..AKA 3 dogs...two of them are large breed dogs and let me tell you...NO ONE (salesmen, etc) comes to the door anymore.
When DH works late, I feel safe knowing my dogs are alert and listening for anything.

ETA: I tend to leave lights on when DH isn't home or working late

Since I had my first child I have this fear all the time. Thankfully we have 1 police officer 2 doors down from me who is always looking out and patroling the neighborhood, an ex officer next door to me and a retired Sheriff diagnal from me as well as a detective behind me... I feel safe with them around. I have their numbers on speed dialChat Icon I have a panic code on my alarm system, however unless I have a panic button attached to me I don't think it would effectively work even though I have 3 alarm key pads in the house.

Anything to do with invasion, abduction I am freaked aboutChat Icon just something I think about a lot. I live in a great area, but you never know your neighbors and anyone can walk into your subdivision. So I tend to worry Chat Icon Chat Icon

Panic buttons are definately available and I'm sure they are easy to install.

I'm going to sound like a paranoid freak, but we have a panic button in our bedroom, I have one on the remote on my keychain, and then I can enter a code when turning off the system if someone is forcing their way in behind me that turns off the alarm and sends a silent distress call to my central station so they send the cops AND there are 2 buttons on my keypad that if I hit them simultanously it is a panic button.

I am also terrfied of a home invasion. DH goes away for work a couple of times like every otehr month and I dread it each time. We have an alarm system and my dog is always alert and will bark but hes a small dog (25 lbs) not so scary.

I think I am going to look into the panic button

Thanks all...these are all great ideas and I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels this way. I am going to call my alarm company tomorrow to find out about my options. It's great to know about the panic button on the keychain, etc...

Re: I am constantly worried about a home invasion...

We also have keychains that allow us access to our alarm and they have panic buttons on them! If it is hit they alarm company calls/send the police immediately instead of calling the house first to make sure everything is okay! We also have a special code we can type in to our keypad that automatically sends out a panic/distress call!

I hope my post didnt make you more freaked out about this stuff.
I shouldn't talk, I am always afraid that it will happen again, but I would rather make everyone a little more cautious about the fact that it can happen so that they can protect themselves.

no, you just made me more cautious which I don't think is a bad thing....looking back, do you feel like there is anything you could have done to prevent it? Maybe I am repeating questions from the original thread, but if there is any light you can shed on the topic it would be great!

Re: I am constantly worried about a home invasion...

Have you thought about getting a guard dog or a big dog like a doberman or something. I know most people are scared to get one if they have babies/small children but I think that they can be excellent family pets and guard dogs if trained correctly. I think big dogs do deter burglars.

I have a Yorkie, does that count? He barks at every noise, but all anyone would have to do is pet him or give him a treat to silence him. I don't think a bigger dog is in the cards for us though...

I live in a doorman building with a deadbolt I had installed and has those keys you cant duplicate and I STILL get scared someone is going to get in here (lately I think it's the guys on the scaffolding outside). I'm going to be exactly like you when we move to a house Chat Icon

I was so scared when we first moved in. Our alarm didn't work right away and they were having all these home invasions that year. I was up until 4 or 5 am worrying.

The alram got installed and then we got rudy who barks if a squirrel farts outside. Im a lot better now

Definitely. We would have been more protected if we really knew how to work the alarm. There is an "instant" feature on the alarm which means once it goes off, it goes full blast. We had it on "stay" which mean it gives you a little time to turn the alarm off before it fully blares.
While it seemed like the robbery was going on for a long time, it was probably only minutes.

I know I said before I was paranoid, but I just made sure I got as many panic buttons in our system when we had it upgraded recently. My brother is a cop and I hear some scary stories.

But I really don't think about it much. I set the alarm and forget about it to be honest. I'm more worried about being mugged in the mall parking lot this time of year than a home invasion.

I only worry when I am home at night alone. I don't spend my days obsessing over it. I'm usually not a worrier, but this is one thing that I feel I have a little control over as opposed to things that are out of my control completely.

I have an "ambush" code on my alarm which sends the police immediately. It's so scary to have to live like this, unfortunately, it's the way it is.Chat Icon

For quite awhile, it did. I was afraid to even answer the door. I would actually hide when someone knocked on the door. Fear is a terrible thing. I actually try not to be so afraid, but sometimes the fear of it happening again overcomes me.
