My sis and I convinced my parents to evacuate. They are north of Tampa Both have health issues and there was just no reason for them to stay. They left at 3 am and are now safe at a hotel in South Carolina. The hotel they are in does not normally accept pets but because they are evacuees they are allowed to have their dog.

That's great news! Glad they got out.

My mom is a first responder so she is staying. Most of her staff left (she's a nurse) and she will not leave her patients. She spent the past couple of days stocking them with supplies and meds for those that live in houses, and transporting those that live in mobile homes to special needs shelters. One of her patients lives in a mobile home with a cat, and the cat couldn't go to the shelter, so now the cat is at my mom's house. With my mom's two cats. And one of the bus drivers for the center my mom manages doesn't have hurricane shutters and couldn't get plywood, so he's going to my mom's house with his cat.

I think after Katrina they can't turn you away at shelter with your pets. But I might be making that up.

I've heard that, but I've also heard that only certain shelters take pets. The patients my mom has all have to go to special needs shelters so those may have different rules.

At least this lady's kitty will be safe with my mom...and three other cats lol...should be interesting.

That's so awesome of her to open her home to people and animals in need! I hope they stay safe.

Thank you!!!

The special needs shelter was evacuated and all the people there were sent inland a bit more so my mom assisted with that earlier.

Now my mom has the following at her house:
Herself and her two cats
One of her patient's cats (patient is in special needs shelter, no pets allowed; cat would have been left in mobile home)
One of her coworkers and a cat he's cat-sitting
One of my sister's coworkers and her two cats

Thank god for doors LOL...three people and six cats...SO FAR.

Will update if/when any additional people or animals are added to the house. Chat Icon

I've been watching the Weather Channel and CNN all day, and haven't seen much damage to be honest. I saw the street in Miami flooded. But no houses blown down etc. What have you seen?

Lots of flooding and trees flying... not pretty but maybe I'm being sensitive at the time

Re: Hurricane Irma

I'm watching the CBS News 24/7 app -- they have local affiliates from Fort Myers and Miami on, for the most part.

It's not as sensationalized as some of the other networks have been, and since most of my family is in southwest Florida, I'm very grateful for being able to tune in to reasonable coverage.

So far things are faring okay, but my family won't get the brunt of Irma until almost 10. They are about 40 minutes north of Fort Myers and this storm is moving slowly.

My mom has power. My sister is at her boyfriend's house and they lost power hours ago. My great-grandma was moved yesterday to a different part of her nursing home facility; today is her 106th birthday and no one could visit her Chat Icon

One of my best friends had to evacuate; she lives in my mom's neighborhood but is in flood zone A so she had to be out of there Friday. I hope her house will be okay, and I'm glad she got out of there.

Right now I haven't seen much in the way of structural damage to buildings. I've seen a lot of fallen trees but so far, houses and buildings are doing okay.

We know a lot of people in Islamorada (one of the Keys)...they evacuated and I hope that their homes are still standing.

A friend of mine is near Gainesville and lost power. She's got spotty cell service but otherwise ok. Also, two different families in Cape Coral. One is in a shelter and the other didn't evacuate. We haven't heard from them.

We know people in Jupiter, on the east coast near West Palm Beach, and in Clermont, which is about 30 minutes outside of Orlando. Both still have power. Jupiter started feeling the bands around 11 last night, Orlando a couple of hours ago. Windy, rain, but so far they are ok.

I have a family member in Bonita a Springs that didn't evacuate (Chat Icon). She lost power Saturday night. She already had water going in her front door as the eye was nearby, before any storm surge. She was texting but I haven't heard anything in a few hours.

Most of my family and friends have evacuated. My cousin in brevard county is a nurse and her dh a cop so they couldn't leave. Brevard has seen wind, rain and tornados. They are hoping for the best.

Not yet Pinkisles Chat Icon . We're still in T&C, we're safe and the ppl from here have been so, so helpful! My brother booked us for Thursday afternoon so hopefully things won't change, although I gotta say, things are slowly progressing so I really don't think they're gonna cancel flights anymore. The airport opened today but only for humanitarian flights though (ppl coming to help from other countries, or for food, etc)

We've kept our family informed as much as possible but I also wrote about it on fb for several of our friends that have been worried about us. I made it public because I'm also sharing the link with the ppl from the Trip Advisor forum for Turks and Caicos, who have been very helpful and also worried about us. I'll share it in here too so u're more han welcome to read it. Thank u for keeping me in ur thoughts momma! Chat Icon Chat Icon
