Hurricane Irma
Some of my friends on St. John have lost their homes. We are desperately trying to find out about other friends / family on St. Thomas and Tortola, but it is so difficult because power and communications are out.

DH's best friends parents are on Tortola - it's not good.

The pictures we have been getting are horrifying. Houses, businesses ripped apart. Those that didn't secure their boats are finding them in parking lots, on the beaches. Power lines are down everywhere. It is going to take a lot and a long time to rebuild these islands, islands that depend upon tourism to sustain them. I feel so helpless right now, keep checking the FB "safe list" to find names.

Hurricane Irma
My family in San Juan have been messaging us. They have no power and are worried about the flooding but they are all safe. They are waiting too see how hard Viegues was hit.
My family in FLorida was finally able to find gas at Costco so all cars are filled and they are taking the RV to GA leaving 5am on Fri. My aunt flew out today to NC. My other cousin's can't leave ones a nurse the other police so they are hunkering down but sent the kids with family.
Praying for Fl.

We're actually in T&C right now, our departure flight to get back home is for Thursday at 3:30pm, the hurricane is suppose to hit the island by Friday but as a precaution, there's a tentative suspension for flights starting tomorrow. We just got an alert from JetBlue saying they've just added another flight for tomorrow and if we want, we can change flights at no extra cost. We can't really do anything til the latest update which will be at 6am, we're hoping this hurricane weakens and changes routes towards open waters and we really prey and hope these beautiful islands don't get hit
Hi! Just checking to see if you got out ok?!

Hi! Just checking to see if you got out ok?!
So much has happened in the last few hours! The cottage that we were renting was located perfectly to protect us against any possible high waves but the owner didn't feel the roof was strong enough for a cat. 5 so we had to look for a hotel room on Grace Bay where all the resorts are, and apparently the safest place considering it's facing away from the hurricane's route. My husband booked a place at a hotel online, and this morning they weren't answering phone calls, son my husband drove there to see what was happening, they said they never received any info about us and gave the room to someone else. Every hotel seemed to be booked so I desperately posted on the T&C forum in Trip Advisor if anyone knew of any hotels that would have availability and a true good samaritan from Canada messaged me offering his place at The Sands with the only condition that if he found someone else looking for shelter that he was gonna let them stay in his place as well. Of course we were in disbelieve and hesitant (the New Yorker side of us) but we went with our gut and took our little family to this place. We're at his condo right now, he gave us the security code to enter and we were able to prepare food, bathed the kids, keep up with the news, well...until Provo considered it was safer to cut the electricity before the hurricane did it. So right now we're running in the resort's generator which is enough to keep the outside hallways lite and also to provide one light on for every condo. Initially the owner also provided us with the password for his own wifi which is the one we were using and also a landline that thanks to his job in Canada, we were able to use to make/receive calls from the US and Canada at no cost. But because there's no electricity, we can't do that anymore and we can only use the wifi from the resort and because everyone's using it at the same time, the signal is pretty week. I will seriously be FOREVER grateful to this person for the rest of my life and will make it my job to pay it forward to others.
The last I check, the eye of the storm was suppose to be passing the area closest to us at around 8pm but I'm not sure if there has been any changes.

The GFS hurricane model is running now and it shows Irma running directly up the east coast of Florida, most likely a category 3 at minimum. So everything in it's path will get hit, Miami, Palm Beach, Daytona, Jacksonville, etc. I am surprised the NHC is still showing this as a western storm.
If you are in Georgia (Savannah) and the Carolina's (Myrtle, Charleston), i would also be very concerned about the track of this thing.
With every update I see, it keeps heading a little further to the west coast of Florida. I think by the time it actually hits, the NHC forecast will wind up being more accurate than the GFS and European estimates.
There's still time until it hits, so it can still change it's path.
That's why hurricanes are so hard to run from. I've heard of a lot of people heading to the Carolinas, which were originally in the direct path of the storm, or to Alabama, which is now in the path.

The power has been cut off in many areas of Turks, so she probably has no access to the internet right now. There is a FB group for the region that I was reading, and I read the island fared much better than they anticipated.

Amazing story, soontobemommy!!! Happy to hear you're safe!!!
I'm a wreck. Been watching this thing like a hawk as my family and friends are all over FL. Most of them are on the west coast. And the latest updates (for the past day) show a direct hit on where they are. My mom, niece, sister, great grandma (whose 106th birthday is tomorrow), godmother and her family, and one of my best friends are all there.
They were devastated by Charley in 2004. Ughhhh. I'm so sick with worry.

Hurricane Irma
My sis and I convinced my parents to evacuate. They are north of Tampa Both have health issues and there was just no reason for them to stay. They left at 3 am and are now safe at a hotel in South Carolina. The hotel they are in does not normally accept pets but because they are evacuees they are allowed to have their dog.

That's great news! Glad they got out.
My mom is a first responder so she is staying. Most of her staff left (she's a nurse) and she will not leave her patients. She spent the past couple of days stocking them with supplies and meds for those that live in houses, and transporting those that live in mobile homes to special needs shelters. One of her patients lives in a mobile home with a cat, and the cat couldn't go to the shelter, so now the cat is at my mom's house. With my mom's two cats. And one of the bus drivers for the center my mom manages doesn't have hurricane shutters and couldn't get plywood, so he's going to my mom's house with his cat.

I think after Katrina they can't turn you away at shelter with your pets. But I might be making that up.
