How old were you....

when you bought your first home?

I am sure this has been posted before but I found this article a little surprising because i would have thought the recent spikes in the market would have made things less affordable - but the article goes on to talk about how the wider array of financing products has actually opened the market up to younger buyers..... Any thoughts?

I was 26 when i bought my first condo, 30 when i bought my first home.

From the article:

"More young owners

In fact, the homeownership rate for people under age 25 jumped from 19.3 percent in 1982 to 23.6 percent as of the first quarter 2006, according to the latest data from the U.S. Census Bureau. For buyers between the ages of 25 and 29, the homeownership rate rose from 38.6 percent to 41.0 percent for the same time period.

"We have far more young home buyers today than ever before," notes Susan Wachter, professor of real estate and finance at the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School, who attributes the growth to several factors that occurred in the 1990s and early 2000s."

Re: How old were you....

honestly I was 19- I used my communion and confirmation money to buy a condo in Boulder CO- where I was going to school

in 1996- I paid $103K- and then I left

so I had to sell and lose all my Money

had I stayed the 2.5 years and graduated

my condo more then doubled to $250K

it was a 1 bedroom - with a loft- used as a second bedroom- with a direct veiw of the rockies

I am still kicking myself....but I was 19 what did I know

i am in your first age bracket. my first time being a homeowner, and it is comparatively cheap (under $400K) and it's a little house.

We bought our co-op at 23 so i check that box. Even though it isn't a house - I stick by that age because I can't get treated like a first time homeowner now. lol

I agree - I STRUGGLED to buy my condo at 26 - and it was a 750 square foot 1 bedroom condo (although it was in hoboken).....

It took me a while after graduating to save up enough for the downpayment because living at home was never an option (too far of a commute). I lived in some pretty scary places to save up for a house - but it was all worth it in the end....

Still looking for that house...and I'm 30 now, so hopefully I'll be 31 when I buy my first house.

Re: How old were you....

I should add that I didn't pay the mortgage- on my condo at 19

it was $800 and I had a roomate who paid $400 and my dad paid $400 for my share instead of paying for the Dorm
