Re: How much time are you taking off from work
The baby is due early January. My boss would like me back in May, I'm hoping to push it until June. So the baby would be about 5-months, which is approx when I returned with DS1. I don't get any paid leave but I figure my costs will be low - no commuting, no going out, etc. I'm saving my pennies now. Maybe it's the stress of thinking of two children, but all I do is fantasize about not returning to work...

Re: How much time are you taking off from work
I took 12 weeks with each baby. I got 8 weeks paid (c section) and the 4 additional weeks I used up A LOT of my sick time. But It was the best decision for me.

Re: How much time are you taking off from work
I'm only getting 3weeks paid. Then 6weeks of std which is garbage. We did our best to pay off as many bills as possible so me staying home wouldn't hurt. I'll probably take a total of 12weeks off. The last 3week's I'll go to the office once or twice a week. I'll be getting paid for that.
I'll be honest. The time is going by so fast. I wish we could swing me staying home for 20weeks but that would mean putting less away in our ira and savings. Plus we need to get use to paying life insurance and her college fund.

Re: How much time are you taking off from work
12 weeks total (FMLA)
just sucks because DD is due in Jan and in order to use FMLA, you must first use all vacation/personal time so when I come back to work in April, I will have NOTHING left
I will have the first 4 weeks paid (all my vacation time) and I will collect STD for the remaining 8 (along with NYS disability).

Re: How much time are you taking off from work
8w at 100% pay... If my dr says its medically necessary i can get an additional 5w (based on how long ive been with thec ompany) at 60%... but thats unlikely. Im not sure if im going to take the additional 4w (FMLA) unpaid or not.

Re: How much time are you taking off from work
Most likely 8 weeks, 6 paid, 2 not.
6 weeks paid for vag deilivery (which I will assume will be the case, 8 weeks for C-section).
I can take the addition 4 or 6 for a total of 12 but without pay and that is just not an option, nor a smart or responsible decision for us. we can not lose my salary for that long. If anything I might do an extra 2 weeks without pay, but absolutely no more than that. I could tack on vacation, but I refuse to use all my vacation time. I would prefer to use it when all 3 of us will spend time together, either way it will be time spent with my baby, so I would prefer it to be with DH also.

Re: How much time are you taking off from work
for all of you who are saying "paid 6 for vaginal or paid 8 for csection" are you referring to NYS disability?
If so, you realize that is $175 per week?
Those who are well versed in FMLA (cant believe I dont remember this) can you collect private short term disability while on FMLA and also collect NYS at the same time?
Also, is it true that you have to burn all vacation/sick time before FMLA kicks in? If this is true, would I use my 4 weeks and then get an additional 12 for FMLA or do my 4 weeks vacation/sick time count towards FMLA?

Re: How much time are you taking off from work
I wish we could afford to take 12 weeks unpaid but alas we cant, i have exactly 2 months off paid. I'm using all my sick and and saving a week of my vacation for just in case emergency. My DH gets 8 weeks paid so that is a life saver!

Re: How much time are you taking off from work
With DC1 I took 6.5 months which I don't regret doing but have no desire to do again. I think this time I'm just going to take the 12 weeks since I only work PT and my parents watch DC.

Re: How much time are you taking off from work
I'll hopefully use 5 days of vacation up front, then 12 weeks of paid maternity leave. I can choose to come back for up to 6 additional weeks on a PT basis, only getting paid for what I work. I'm not sure if I'll do that yet. Have a while to decide still.

Re: How much time are you taking off from work
12 weeks. I will work up until the day before my c-section (assuming all goes well).
With my first, I was nowhere near ready to go back to work at 6 weeks. I was still only getting 4 hours of sleep a day at 6 weeks.
8 weeks would have been too soon as well. Many women do it. But my recovery, my mental health, and overall well-being wasn't even at 50% at that point.

Re: How much time are you taking off from work
Reading the responses, I am realizing my company's leave in incredibly generous as at my level it is fully paid. I have been here for 8 years and am going to receive 16 paid weeks (although I can't come back with any vacation as we don't allow vacation carry over and don't have sick days). Yes I worked so many 60-70 hour weeks with no overtime and have no 401K match and pay a ridiculous amount for insurance but this is their one true "perk" (even men receive 5 weeks paid) - I am surprised more people here are not having babies!

Thankfully, based on my company's short term disability policy, I will get paid by my company my salary for 6 or 8 weeks (depending on delivery).
If my company did not offer this benefit, then I would receive NYS disability, which is what you referred to above.

This is just what my company offers, it is not STD. Those first 6 or 8 weeks count towards the total 12 weeks FMLA

Re: How much time are you taking off from work
I am due the end of october and provided i go on time, i figured out ill be getting paid through the beginning of march. I get 6 or 8 weeks paid depending on the type of delivery, then i have about 3 months of vacation/comp time saved up. Once ive used all my time, i have the option to take 1 yr unpaid, which is what im planning on doing, so ill return march 2014. My job also gives me 4 weeks paid before my due date.

Re: How much time are you taking off from work
i am planning on staying out for 12 weeks...i would like to stay home for a few more but we'll see how it goes.
i get 1 week at 100%, 5 weeks 60% and the rest unpaid or use PTO time. I think i might use 2 weeks of PTO time.

Re: How much time are you taking off from work
I'm shooting for 12 weeks. 7 weeks paid, 3 weeks vaca and 2 weeks unpaid. My husband will then take 3 weeks off to stay with the baby once I return to work and then off to daycare she goes.

Very generous!
Will you have to work those hours after baby is born?
My old company was 12 weeks full pay, but it was a draining job. No one would be able to come back after 6 weeks
