We didn't get them back from our accountant yet, but we average each year about $6-8K.

Us too. DH gets too much taken out of his paycheck each week so we get a good amount back.
He gets mad that I don't contribute too much towards the return but, I tell him that I use better cash management and receive my money throughout the year.

I am If you get too much money back then you are giving the gov't your money throughout the year for free. with rising food and gas costs, wouldn't you want that money in your weekly paycheck?

Technically, yes, you would ideally want $0 for your return. However, most people see it as "extra" money, and use the refund as sort of a short-term savings account. An extra $100 a week you don't notice, but an extra $5000 at the end of the year is a big chunk of money.

i was just gonna say the same thing! if you are gettnig a big refund, it means that you had money taken out of your paycheck that the government was earning interest on all year! i'd rather have that extra money in my ING account all year earning interest for ME lol or i could just be jealous because DH and i end up oweing every year...

i find this to be true among many of my clients---they claim zero all year cause they KNOW they are not good with saving it and that they will ultimately wind up spending the money and its easier to take the chunk and put it into a savings account at once.
for some -- its the only way they save cause of poor money mangement skills

I have always had more taken out to cover dividends I receive that get taxed at the end of the year...
and, we have a ton of out of pocket medical expenses (like 20-30k worth)...plus, now that we bought a house....
I'm not a saver and I'd rather get money back than owe

Re: How much are you getting back?
Dh works on commission and the scale of deductions can change depending on how much he makes per check & then per month, year, etc.
We have gotten schtupped in the past when his payroll person did not take out the right amount and we ended up owing 5 figures the year we got married.
I never want to owe again & would rather take out too much than not enough. ETA: plus we have a lot of deductions from our house, medical bills, and his supplies for work.

Not everyone's income and tax liability is so easy to predict. Yes, definitely no reason why W-2 people should be getting back that much money. That's a waste of one's own resources. But some people's taxes fluctuate so much each year, that either the govt requires them to pay in a certain amount (to avoid penalties later) or they pay in enough to be on the safe side. I know people who get back $100,000+ in taxes. Sometimes their income is too unpredictable, especially if they invest heavily in the stock market. They usually just apply the refund to the next year's taxes though.
