Re: How Long Do You Stay @ Xmas Dinner

We had Hanukkah last night at my grandma's house. My in-laws and BIL are invited to celebrate. We were at the party for about 5 hours - that does not include the 1 hour 45 minute ride each way to get there. I asked my DH if he thought it was to long and he said no, it was perfect. I think that both of our families enjoy each other's company. We were the first to leave because our commute is the longest and DH had work today. Everyone else lives within 30 minutes of each other. As for party length we all do long parties, so I think that since we are all used to it, it was fine. I am really extremely fortunate that our families all get along and like one another.

We celebrate on Christmas Eve. This year I asked people to arrive at 7pm but they didnt' show until almost 8:30 (they live 10 minutes away Chat Icon ). Anywho, we go through midnight because we open presents etc. They left by 1am or 1:30am so about 5 hours. My mom and brother slept over.

Christmas day we had my brother over with his kids to pick up their presents. They stayed for about 2 hours, but there was no meal involved (they came after they ate lunch, but before dinner time).

Re: How Long Do You Stay @ Xmas Dinner

that's normal for mine.......1:30-7:30 & I love it!! we draw out apps....then have dinner.....then presents & santa, then dessert....then something entertaining and stupid to all laugh.

DH's family is apps...immediate dinner.....immediate salad/cheese....immediate dessert then presents like clockwork. I like the way my family does it better.

I enjoy being with my family (and DH's) so it has never, ever crossed my mind to 'count' the hours we spend together during the holidays!

Re: How Long Do You Stay @ Xmas Dinner

With my family it is usually at least 6 hours but we have a big family and everyone likes to hang out. My husband's family spends 4 hours max and usually it is much shorter.

We arrive at my in law's home around noon and stay until around 3:30. Then we go to my sister's home - get there around 4 and stay until around 7/8.

I guess I am mean, I just can't stand staying that long and staring at each other.

Its not like we play games and watch movies. Maybe cards but I just feel like they do that to draw it out.

Not at all. I'm not a big fan of it either. The worst is that DH's family always schedules big gatherings for Sundays/nights before I have to go to work and they start them at 4pm. Why 4pm? Why not 12N or 1pm? It makes no sense to start a gathering at 4pm on Sunday when you know it will last more than 5 hours. This is a constant disagreement between DH and I.

Re: How Long Do You Stay @ Xmas Dinner

I wish we had long holiday visits on both of our sides! On DHs side it's just us and his parents on Xmas Eve so we were there for 2 1/2 hours before MIL kicked us out at 7 so she could go to bed (kid you not - after making a big deal about us spending the holidays with her). On my side we used to do the whole big 6 hour holiday, but people have in-laws to visit and what not now so it's not as big anymore. Once we get a bigger place I want to host both families and I hope it turns into the 6 hour holidays again.

Re: How Long Do You Stay @ Xmas Dinner

it's family so as long as we want! IMO there is no etiquette when it comes to family holiday gatherings--you stay until it's over.

we usually go on around 8+ hours. i would stay longer if it didn't get so late!

Christmas Day we stayed from 2 to 8 and we werent the last to leave!

Re: How Long Do You Stay @ Xmas Dinner

Our entire family party doesn't last 6+ hours, let alone just the dinner part! Chat Icon

From start to finish our holiday parties are 5 hrs at a max, usually 4

So it was from bethpage to westchetser to bethpage to kings park to bethpage, all in 24 hours.

Chat Icon I have the opposite trek--We are in Westchester & my family is in Bethpage.

I agree with you though, it's the sitting around and either talking about nothing or talking about the same thing, or listening to 1 perosn go on & on that gets to me & makes 5 hours feel like 15! Chat Icon

Re: How Long Do You Stay @ Xmas Dinner

Everything with his family is drawn out....and there are no games being played other than cards which is BORING! We spend Xmas eve there and get there at 2PM, and we left at 1:30 AM. I wanted to shoot myself!!

XMAS day was with my family and we all slept by my gradparents house so it was a 3 day event. Next year, I'm shortening both!

Re: How Long Do You Stay @ Xmas Dinner

We make 3 stops. First stop 1-2 hours max, sometimes shorter if we don't get out of the house on time! Chat Icon

Second stop (the big one) appetizers at 2:00, first course 3:30, second course 5:00, dessert 6:00. We leave between 7-7:30 to head to our third stop.

Third stop 1-2 hours.

Re: How Long Do You Stay @ Xmas Dinner

DH and I went to my mom's at 9 am to meet up with my niece and nephews to watch them get all excited over santa's gifts.

Then at noon we went over to my mil's house to celebrate with all of them. Unfortunately, DH's nephew has 5ths disease and I am pregnant. So we rushed out of there at 2:30 before they arrived.

Back to my mom's for the remainder of the day. I would say I was home xmas night around 10.

We all live in the same town, so there is no real travel time. I never realized how many hours that is!!

But, I enjoy spending the holiday like that.
