How emotional are you

when it comes to your pet?

DH and I were at the ER with Max yesterday and I was a mess. He was telling me to get a grip.

Meanwhile, there were 3 guys there dropping off their doggie and as one of them left, he was in tears. The dog looked fine and looked happy, maybe just there to be fixed..but this guy walked out crying.

Now, I don't know the real story about his dog, but I told DH that even big strong dudes get emotional about their pets.

I guess he was doing the macho thing?

I cannot deal with my pets being sick, I feel terrible. Guys are guys, sometimes they try to hide it.

Re: How emotional are you

I cry when I read about other pets getting sick.
I cry when I just THINK of her getting sick.

I cry when I read the puppy mill threads.

I'm very emotional lately.

Re: How emotional are you

My dogs are three of the most important things in my life. i am ok if its a routine check up, but if they are sick I get very upset.

A couple of times my lhasa got out and I went into full panic mode, crying, etc.

I try to remain calm in front of Charlie if something is going on, but I am so emotional when it comes to him. If the doctor has to give him a shot or do something that is going to hurt him I cry and try not to let him see my face.

Re: How emotional are you

Very! Two and a half weeks ago we had to put one of our dogs down. I was laying on the floor with him sobbing (my DH was crying also). There I was almost 7 mos. pregnant, drapped over my dog with swelled eyes and nose, just a mess. And you know what? I could have cared less at that moment. Our dogs are our family and I felt like my heart was being ripped out. Same with my DH. I don't understand people in general that try and hide emotions. A real man cries.
Also when we had him cremated the next day, I was crying my eyes out and there were 3 people waiting to get their dogs ashes. Although I didn't see if they were actually crying, the guys looked really upset also.

Almost a year ago when we were still in the stages of trying to figure out what was wrong with Cooper's digestive system, the word cancer came up and I LOST it. He's happy and has no idea what's going on or what's being said about his future and he's completely helpless... It's heartbreaking.

I cried when I picked her up from getting spayed. I yelp when she yelps - usually when she gets stepped on.

I get SICK to my stomach when it comes to yearly check ups. I'm a wreck until I know they are fine.

I am denial about the fact that our cats will one day die. They won't. When Dh and I are 116, decrepit in our rocking chairs, they will be in our laps, looking exactly the same as they do today.

when DH's dog had cancer last year, he looked fine from the outside. we often took him to the vet for chemo treatments and regular check-ups, and since he loved being out of the house, he was much more active and hyper than he was at home. when we got home, he would be exhausted and lethargic, especially towards the end.

even on the day we brought him to the vet to put him down, as soon as he saw the leash, he got so excited - which made our decision even harder. my DH sobbed for hours during and afterwards - he couldn't even drive.

i just wanted to point out that the pets you see at the vet or hospital may *look* normal but there may be something very wrong.

i disagree with your DH - i am incredibly attached to my cat and i would cry too if he had to go to the hospital for any reason.

Re: How emotional are you

DH and I react very differently.

When Misty ate the Gorilla Glue, I though she was going to die and was hysterical crying. Dan was so strong and supportive that day, but when we went to pick her up after the surgery, he just started crying and I was fine.

When Espresso got sick, Dan took him to the vet and called me from there, crying. I was emotionally fine and helped him to decide what we had to do. When the vet called us two days later to tell us he blocked up again and she thought we may have to put him down, I was so hysterical I had to leave work.

So either way, we are both emotional. It just hits us at different times.

Re: How emotional are you

Extremely. I could not love my pets more than I do and if anything happens to them, it hurts me and worries me the same as if it was a human being.

ETA - I have always been like this, even as a child. I would save up my birthday money, etc and send donations to animal charities, even if I only had $5 to send. If I would see a homeless kitty, I would have a hard time sleeping worrying about him/her. They are just so innocent and just want to be loved. I love that.

Re: How emotional are you

when we adopted our cats the people at NSAL told us that we have to remember that we will outlive them.

I thought at the time, yeah, yeah, right...give me the kittens..

I always had it in the back of my mind.

Re: How emotional are you

I was always a mess with Molly. After her spaying gone bad - when they took out her kidney - I was a complete disaster. I couldn't go to the vet without crying.

After she passed away - I still would cry when I spoke to her vet on the phone.

I don't know how I will be with Abby - she gets spayed next week and I'm petrified - but I don't know if it will be like it was with Molly. Molly was my first puppy and truly my other child. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

ETA: I have never in my life seen my DH cry the way he did the night and days after Molly died. He laid over her body in the street crying in front of about 20 other people. This is someone who is such a manly guy!

I can't even bring her to the vet for checkups, or even call for the appointment without getting choked up. If there is something wrong, forget about it. She had clogged anal glands and I cried for days, and everyday now i check for signs that it maybe happenng again and I obsess over it.

At least 1x per month I cry thinking about what will happen when she gets old and gets to that point...

Sometimes I wonder if I am too attached and need mental help.

I cried when she had a stomach virus and wouldn't stop throwing up and we had to take her to the emergency vet.
