How do you tip your garbagemen?

My garbagemen never come at the same time every week. Sometimes its 5AM, sometimes its 1030AM when we're at work.

We want to tip them but I am NOT comfortable leaving money taped to the lid where anyone can take it.

Thoughts?

We tip them..most of the time they come at 6AM (twice a week). Whatever day from this point on that we can catch them, we just run out and give it to them.
See if you can keep an eye out for them during the 5am time

We always wait to be able to hand it to them. Usually we have to wait till we're off and do it between christmas and new years.

ours also come at random times and we work random schedules, so it's too much of a pita to try to give it to them.
i tape a note to the lid saying that the tip is taped to the door. i figure it would be too much effort for someone to read the note, and come all the way up to the door to steal it. we haven't had a problem yet.

Try to find them. I would never leave it taped to the lid, because there's a person I've seen going through the garbage pails looking for cans and bottles

We left it taped to the lid. Hopefully they got it, it was VERY windy that night last week (we left $50). We do live at the end of a court with very minimal traffic, so I really wasn't worried about someone taking it.

Received a Seasons Greeting postcard from the garbagemen stating to leave notes or cards under the can lid and not taped to the lid. So, under the lid it will be. They left a number so I might call them the day of to let them know.

Don't know why that's , but yeah, we have tons of people in our neighborhood going around with shopping carts for the recycling. So I definitely would not leave it in there either. Our garbagemen are pretty consistent in what time they get there though so we're able to hand it to them pretty easily. Last year, we actually never saw them since they would come at all crazy hours due to the snow.

ok don't flame me; but we've been in our house 3 winters now and we've never tipped our garbage men! I never even thought about it!

Is this common? I wonder if my neighbors do it? I'm in South Queens; not sure if area matters but i just never thought to do it before.

I usually work from home on Fridays so I run out when I hear them coming. They come at varying times as well so it's difficult.

I tried taping it under the lid one year and then noticed that the tape fell off so that didn't work!

We wait until we see them in person. Last year we gave them $40 each (there are three of them) and plan to do the same this year.

Ours actually leave us a holiday post card with their address on it....some may find it presumptious of them to do this, but where I live you will never see the garbage men. Ours come at 530am and we live on very large secluded properties so you dont even have time to run out if you wanted. So thats why they do it...b/c some people DO want to give and who wants to chance the gift getting thrown out or stolen? Its sort of a tough place for these guys to be in, so I am glad they leave a card so we get the chance to thank them.

I actually just made out my card and check to mail it to them. They take everything and never give us a hard time, and to me thats a blessing to be honest. Some guys can be real sticklers and thats such a PIA.

For those that tip their sanitation workers, do you live in LI?
My stepbrother is NYC sanitation worker and actually got suspended because his supervisor saw him accept a tip! it was close to holiday season, but he still got in major trouble....


To answer OP, we just bought our house in Feb, and I'm thinking to tip them when no one else is around...

I never tip either and dont understand the practice of tipping civil service workers on LI, esp for a job they are already being paid to do and may even get compensated for extra by their dept supervisors, etc....
