How do you split up Mothers Day with your mother and MIL?

This is always a dilemma with me and DH. My only sibling is out of state, so I like to spend the day with my mom, as she will be alone. My DH has two siblings that take his mother out every mothers day and he insists he go. Now we are at the point of going our seperate ways for the day, which I kind of think is wrong. I also just suffered another miscarriage and have been through infertility treatments, and feeling a little down seeing all the mothers day signs this year, expecially with my recent loss. I've done mothers day here for both mothers in the past, but not up to it this year. I plan to get take out at my mom's favorite restaurant and heading out to her. She does not like the restaurants on that day, too hectic for her. I Suggested we take his mom out to dinner the night before and the next day she can spend it with his brother and sister for dinner. She'll have a mothers day filled weekend, but I can see the look on his face.

How do you all split the day?

We celebrate with all our parents. My brothers wife mom is deceased and my DH's sister is only 21 and not married. It works out nice. We do the same for fathers day.

This is what we're doing. If they don't all come to our house, we all meet at a restaurant. The ILs all get along, so for us, it works out nicely.

Re: How do you split up Mothers Day with your mother and MIL?

We used to take both moms out for brunch on Mother's Day.

However, my parents do not like going out with MIL (noone does) so it looks like I'm doing something separately for my mom Saturday and then brunch on Sunday with MIL. I kinda like it better this way though because I don't get to spend too much alone time with my mom anymore since having DD.

Normally we see dh mom on Saturday and my mom Sunday. This year we have a wedding (dh side) Saturday night. Now he wants to see hs mom Sunday, even tho we will see her sat night Chat Icon It's causing some friction, I'm a mother I should get to spend the day how I want and do what we usually do Chat Icon She has 3 other kids beside my dh.

I was going to host a brunch then go see MIL, but I just don't feel like it since wedding ends late

Re: How do you split up Mothers Day with your mother and MIL?

my monster-in-law made it really easy for us...
the first year DH and i were together we asked about seeing her for mothers day...she said sure come over on mothers day (1.5 hours away). The day before she called and said ok please bring all food for dinner, drinks, chips and plan to bbq Chat Icon so we went that year, brought the food and did all the work...the following year we invited her and my mom to our apartment and made dinner there. MIL is so unappreciative and throughout the years has totally alienated herself from us and her entire family...so we arent going to be seeing her this year Chat Icon
but to answer your question, how we used to split it up (and how we split up fathers day) is my family on saturday, his family on sunday (or vice versa). yes it stinks that one ends up being alone on the actual day (parents are divorced) but there is nothing we can do about that.

since your mom doesnt like the crowded restaurants on mothers day, take her out on saturday night for dinner with your DH and spend sunday with DHs mother. I dont think you should separate from DH. if you are dead set against not seeing your mom mothers day, then do lunch with her (the restaurants are less crowded) and dinner with Dhs family.

Super blessed that my parents and MIL get along really well, so having everyone here for either brunch or a BBQ.

Re: How do you split up Mothers Day with your mother and MIL?

We either all go out to a restaurant or everyone comes to our house. My DH does most of the cooking and cleaning up so I can enjoy mothers day and relax. I do usually choose to make a thing or two bc I like to cook and bake :)

Re: How do you split up Mothers Day with your mother and MIL?

Our parents all get along, but it gets complicated having everyone together, as my sister also has a MIL, as does my SIL. It gets crazy if we try to have everyone over, and this year, since I'm toward the end of my pregnancy, I'm not up for it. So we're doing what we do almost every year. Running to Staten Island for brunch at my sister's with my family, then coming back for dinner here on LI with DH's family. Some years, we see one family on Saturday, and one on Sunday. Next year, I will finally be a mommy, and I don't think I'm going to want to do all of this running around, so I might try to have everyone over...but that still won't be relaxing!

Re: How do you split up Mothers Day with your mother and MIL?

We divide it up as lunch/dinner or Saturday/Sunday depending on everyone's availability.

Both DH and I have multiple siblings, who also have inlaws to take out on their own sides, so we swap it off.

This year, DH's mom gets Sunday night dinner while we're taking out my mom on Sat night...so next year, my mom will get Sunday night dinner and MIL will likely be Sat night dinner or Sunday brunch.

Re: How do you split up Mothers Day with your mother and MIL?

My mom lives a bit too far for a one-day trip so we usually see my MIL in Queens. I try to make it up to my mom in other ways. My only sister lives OOS and never sees my mom on Mother's Day or even sends a card.
