Re: How do you define yourself?
After reading all the posts on this thread the same thought stayed with me...undefined.
I am a wife, a daughter, a friend, a worker. I try to be good at all of those things.. I'm a thinker, a reader, and a talker - I do all of those things often. But I can't think of any one single thing that defines me. I guess it all does.

Re: How do you define yourself?
The first thing that comes into my mind is mother. I define myself as a mom because it is the most consuming, rewarding, and most important thing in my life.
5 years ago (before kids) I would have defined myself as a wife and teacher. I am still a wife (been "retired" from teaching for 4 1/2 years)...but I don't define myself as such. Motherhood comes to mind first.
At different stages in life...we have differing "definitions" of ourselves. It's based on what is most front-and-center in your life at that time.
I wonder what life will be like when I will define myself as "Grandmother".

Now that I'm a mom, not a degree that I have earned comes close to defining me as this...It is my greatest achievement, underneath it I am a wife, a dental hygienist, a friend, a daughter.....My screename would stay the same....I am a blessed Mommy

Re: How do you define yourself?
It has changed so much over the years. Years ago I used to be identified as the dancer. Since I danced for years and taught. Over time it has changed over and over again. I guess the one thing that has always stuck is being irish. So as of now I guess it would be, irish, mom, teacher and whatever role I play in other peoples lives..like wife, daughter, sister, etc.

Re: How do you define yourself?
Honestly? I could never define myself by one or two things. I just define myself by being an ever-evolving person.

Re: How do you define yourself?
I dont really identify myself with anything but what I feel inside. RADIO is in my screen name because its my lifes dream and passion....I suppose thats really old already and I should change it.

Right now all I can think of is.....FINALLY PREGNANT!!
ETA- It is interesting that some define themselves as "Jewsih" - yet I would never think to define myself by my religion. Why do you think that might be?? Are Jewish women brought up to be more conscious of hteir religion as their identity?
First,
Second, I think that for many Jewish women (& men), our religion is also our cultural and ethnic heritage and influences the way we live our lives to varying degrees. For example, our home is Kosher and we follow many of the dietary laws outside of the house. I also do think that as a minority, I have always been conscious of being Jewish. As a child in elementary school, I was one of the few children who went to Hebrew school instead of CCD, and I observed different holidays, etc.

Re: How do you define yourself?
i totally agree with the women who say they dont like to be defined with another person.....i am me! determined, loyal, loving, hard worker.....im sure when im a mother i would consider myself nurturing and caring as opposed to ________'s mom

Re: How do you define yourself?
I am Jewish too, and it is odd that we tend to define ourselves as such - I think it is a cultural identity, interesting. Of course, I do not solely define myself by that. I am also quirky and a nurturer (I always played the stereotypical mother among friends growing up) and considerate. I also have the flaw of trying to define myself by how others see me, rather than how I see myself - something I constantly strive to overcome.

Re: How do you define yourself?
Wow I really don't know....first thing that came to mind is teacher...this is something that I worked hard for even before my DH was in the picture...then I guess wife and newlywed would come next and then Polish, Italian, Irish American...I think most people now define me as very Irish with a very Irish first and last name now

Re: How do you define yourself?
The first thing that came to mind is my character or at least my view of my character (loyal, sincere, etc). Of course I choose to discount the character flaws when defining myself. After that it would be by my sex, work, family.

Re: How do you define yourself?
this is a hard one. i guess i identify myself thru personality traits. i relate to my cultural and well travelled side (i have stayed in many places for long amounts of time). i also am really into linguistics, so i am always thinking about language and communication. if that makes any sense. i spend large parts of my day working with foreigners teaching english, so in addition to teaching them, i also have to understand other things such as what their culture is. for example, why cant the brazilians just be quiet when i give a lesson- b/c it is in their culture to talk over people. so i could say i am cultural and am very into my job.

I think a big part of it is because judaism, in large part, is not defined by religion. I know it doesn't make sense at all because by definition, judaism IS a religion, but for those of us who grew up jewish, it's so much more than that... it's a culture all to itself - latkes with applesauce, dressing up as Esther, apples with honey, jewish grandmothers, rugula, etc... for me, being jewish is my heritage, it's what all of my ancestors went through so I could be here, it's all the yummy food I ate as a child, it's my yenta grandparents who spoke english mixed with yiddish. And the funny thing is I feel it DOES define me in a very distinct way, and yet, I don't believe in the religious aspect at all. In fact, I'm agnostic
