How did everyone learn to cook?

My mother always worked full time and we had nannies growing up but none of them really cooked that well so it was my job to cook for 7 people 4-5 days a week starting around the age of 13-14 years old and I wasnt really aloud any where until it was done. I always had anger towards my mother becuase of that but now I am 24 and know how to make alot of differnt things and appreciate what she taught me. I also enjoyed learning from her and my grandmother just didn't like being told to do it.

Re: How did everyone learn to cook?

just kind of self taught. Started out following recipies and now I just "wing" everything. I enjoy experimenting, and luckily DH loves my experiments!

My mom! We always cooked for all the jewish holidays together! Now, because we live so far apart, when we are together we always cook a lot together.

Re: How did everyone learn to cook?

i learned on my own and from watching my mom. i loved to bake when i was young and i would look thru cookbooks and find a recipe i wanted to try and i would cook it with my mom. in high school for two years i did the vocational education thing and did half the day of culinary arts for two years. i then went on to college and did restaurant management and cooking classes were involved in the degree.

10 years later i got out of the restaurant industry, but damn can i cook! although i have to admit i am just getting into asian cooking and i need improvement on that. if only i could read the label of what each thing is at the asian market, i think i would be better.

Re: How did everyone learn to cook?

My mom and dad cooked a lot when we were growing up. We rarely had all of the fastfood and quick dinner stuff that a lot of my friends' parents would make on a regular basis.

So I learned from just being around them in the kitchen, and helping out at a young age. By about 5-6 I was allowed to help my mom cut up veggies with a small knife, stir things with her assistance while they were cooking, and measure things in the measuring cups. She'd also bake every saturday morning so I was able to help her with all of that.

By the time I was 10 my younger sister was born and with 5 kids my mom was a busy woman! So me and my older sister helped out a lot in cooking and getting food ready for the family.

Re: How did everyone learn to cook?

My mother was the first to teach me how to cook the basics. Then at 15 when I became a vegetarian I started experimenting with recipes myself. Now, I just love to create great veggie dishes.

Re: How did everyone learn to cook?

I watched and helped my mom and grandma a lot when I was little and growing up. I pretty much learned from them. I also watch a lot of food network for new stuff.

Re: How did everyone learn to cook?

My mother really didn't cook much and never wanted me in the kitchen so I learned just from being married and trying different things.. My MIL has showed me things also and given me some great tips.

Re: How did everyone learn to cook?

My father was stationed in Germany as chef for a General during the the Vietnam War. The man can whip anything into the fanciest meals and make it look beautiful too.
I cooked along-side him my whole life and now enjoy trying to make ordinary things extrordinary. And I enjoy feeding people too. :)
