Re: How are you saving for college?
Posted by eddiesmommy
Just wanted to say, I had my college paid for in full by my parents....I did not and do not have a poor work ethic, or any sense of entitlement in the workplace. I have also seen people who had to pay their way through, drop out of college, not apply themselves. So while it played at part for some, it does not always mean that for all who had their education paid for.
I think the stepping stones for work ethic and character and responsibility, are set long before its time to go to college.
ITA with every word of this.
My mom had very little money when we were growing up--I can't even count the number of times we had the lights turned off on us, and I remember my mom pouring diesel fuel into our oil tank because the oil guy felt bad that we had no heat, and told her that they are the exact same thing. I remember these things vividly.
So you can imagine my surprise when I found out that she had saved every single penny that she possibly could in order to send me to college. Why? Because she wanted me to have the opportunities that SHE never had. My mom is a high school graduate, and she wanted to see her kids go to college.
I came out of 4 years of college with $4,000 worth of student loans. For that, I will be forever grateful. I worked my way through high school and college--babysitting, retail, I even worked for 2 years in Cortland's dining hall. I don't feel for one second that my work ethic suffered because I didn't have to pay for my college education.
I plan to pay for as much of my childrens' college education as I can, because I don't want them to graduate and automatically be burdened by $300/month payments that they might not be able to afford.

Re: How are you saving for college?
We aren't yet. Hopefully we'll open a college acct. for her soon BUT I don't anticipate fully paying for her college. I don't think we'll have the money to.
Both DH and I have student loans, our parents did what they could but it wasn't enough for the full 4 years and that's okay. We're also going to stress to our DD a SUNY school. We did our undergrad work at SUNY Stony Brook and we got an excellent education for not a lot of money. My little cousin is at a college right now in MA and my aunt and uncle pay $43K a year for him to go. I mean really, how ridiculous. I can't justify that expense for an undergrad degree, I just cannot so hopefully we can encourage her to take advantage of the great SUNY schools we have here and we will help her out as much as we can when the time comes.

dh is fully prepared to take a job at a private university when the time comes in order to have the kids attend that school if they want. that is how dh's family sends their children to school...cafeteria workers and janitors.
That's what my mom did, my brother and I didn't pay a dime for tuition undergrad, only books and fees. My brother decided to take out loans to live on campus, I lived at home.

Smart idea. I would totally do that for my kids down the road.

at a 30th bday party last weekend, b-day girl, notre dame grad, zero loans, mom was librarian there.

I agree 100% My parents did have me pay loans for law school though
But I believe in not burdening an 18-22 year old with the payments.
i DID work all throughout college (store, waitressing, telemarketer) so its not like I had free reign
ITA. I worked and my parents paid for most of it, but I still needed spending money/money for books, etc. I don't think it has anything to do with work ethic.
We have a 529 for DS.
My father worked at a college where I could have gone for free, but I chose to go somewhere else, further away from home. I would like DS to choose to go wherever he would like to go.

Re: How are you saving for college?
We just put money into a bank account we have set aside for DS. We put money in when we can plus any money he gets for holidays (he gets money for easter, halloween, anything and everything). In the future we will probably invest it in mutual funds and cd's and maybe take a chance on some stocks.
I don't think it is realistic to save enough to pay for his entire college education, especially if we plan to have more children. I graduated 12 years ago and back then my 4 years cost $135,000. I can only hope that the money we save for him will make it possible for him to attend the school of his choice without his having to worry that his financial aid package won't be sufficient. I want and expect him to take out loans; however, I do not want him to have to work while in college as a means to support himself as I feel that his focus while in school should be school. This is the way it was for me and what i want for him. College is stressful enough without having to work 20 hours a week.

Same exact thing here - parents paid for college and i paid/received scholarships for law school. I worked equally hard in both schools. I know people who had loans in college and cared less about going to class. I would feel horrible if i missed class or did poorly in class knowing how much my parents sacrificed to send me to college. Paying for my childrens education is a priority for me and my DH. We live below our means in order to save for school - not a great house or great cars or great vacations. College is going to be aHUGE expense by the time they go to school. I don't want them walking around with huge debts like my DH. We were putting money away in a 529 for both of them but just increased it b/c we realize that we need alot more to pay for 4 years of school

Re: How are you saving for college?
we have a 529 that my dh funds quarterly. right now, we put in $500 every 3 months.
we also have a savings account set up and deposit all give money into that. we are exploring other options for this money that does not involve a 529 or other purpose directed account.

same here. The biggest mistake people make is setting up a 529 plan and putting so much $$$ in it, that they dont save enough $$ for yourself to retire.
Exactly, I hear/read this ALL the time on financial shows/books
That said we have a 529 for our DD some brokerage accounts and savings accounts for her...but not all is for college. Also, I had my school paid for (no loans), and now have an assistantship for my PhD. My DH has loans from pharmacy school.
