People who keep on having babies with no college funds
Do you judge people who have over 3 kids and don't have a college fund set up for the first? It is not a worry for them at all?
DH judges my parents and does not understand why the baby making continued knowing that they did not have any college plans for us. He wants to only have 2 kids and make sure they are set.

No I wouldnt judge someone about that. I earned my education - I wanted to go to college and I did it myself. So what if I started off at community collage - I kept my GPA up, earned scholarships, worked full time in the day and went to school full time at night... and I graduated with my degree.
If a child wants to go to collage there are ways to do it and I dont think there has to be a collage fund.

I completely agree. So far out of my parents 5 graduates, 4 of us went to college. 3 on scholarships.
DH feels it is risky and irresponsible

No I don't judge people based on that. College fund or not if they decide to go to college and are determined then they'll be ok.

Ditto. I didn't have a fund and I am just paying it off. My 4 cousins, however, had funds and none of them went! They pretty much spent the funds. So what was the point?

Also- not everyone is destined for college. The way the economy is right now, I think my kids might do better financially if they learned a trade - in many cases the money is a lot better than what college grads are making!

Exactly. My sister is going on full scholarship to Johns Hopkins, no college fund. Can you tell I am proud?

I don't know if I'll have a fund for my children, but if I don't i will help them pay off loans.. up to the price of a state education.
That is what my family did with me.

going off on a tangent: I definitely judge people who don't help their daughters go to college, but instead pay for the wedding. To me, that sends the message that females aren't meant for higher education.
Another tangent: I wonder why my MIL sent my DH to an elite private high school, but ran out of money when he was in his last year of college. I think she could have planned that a little better.
But, parents are not obligated to send their kids to college.
Now, if they can't afford to keep a roof over their heads, and keep making babies, that's an issue...

My friends parents offered all 4 girls the same deal: they would pay for college OR a wedding, but not both. So far 2 went to collage and one had a $75k wedding...

Dh's went to the Air Force Academy for nothing and I went to Cuny JJAY for next to nothing.
My parents may have started out with a college fund for me but in 18 years things changed and my Dad was out of work so the money went to keep the house and food on the table.
I got 20,000 for college went allowed me to graduate with no loans and 20,000 for a wedding for over 150 people.. no complaints!
(Thank God for Equity in the house!)
Where I live now it's either money for college or a boob job.. Most of the girls pick new boobs then end up married real fast.

OMG when I went to college, no one was even THINKING about a wedding - least of all me!!
I got max. student loans, scholarships, worked through HS and college, and what I couldn't pay for, dad took car of int he end.

No, I don't judge.
Dh is one of 7 - there was no college fund for any of them...yet 6 of them went to college - STATE school - and they are ALL very successful, with no debt.
Like someone else said, if there is a determination, they'll be OK.

That's crazy.
College is not a birthright. If they family can & wants to pay, great, but many people do it on their own.
My parents didn't set up a fund, but I earned a large partial scolarship & took out student loans, & they payed the rest, which mostly ammonted to the room & board & the increase in tuition in the later years.

OMG- are you kidding me? College is not something a parent is espected to pay for!! You are almost an adult at that point?
While believe me I will struggle to make SURE my children have money for it, I truly will..if anyone EVER said something to me about not having at a certain point, I'd think they were the crazy ones.
ETA- what about spending more time helping children excel and trying to get scholarships?

I definitely don't judge...I don't have any children yet nor am I TTC, but based on our current financial situation and the way tuition costs are rising, I seriously doubt we'll have enough saved to pay for 4 years of tuition for our future child/ren. I'm sure there will be *something* put aside but I don't know if it will be enough to cover everything.

Nope.. Pensacola/Ft. Walton Beach Area.... It's a military town so alot try to marry their daughters off at 18. But tons of fake boobies at the beach here!
