Re: Horrible Tragedy in Seaworld today

I don't know if I'd call this a tragedy - it's a horrible incident, and a woman lost her life - But, she made the decision to work with these anmials, i'm sure she knew the risks, AND, regardless of how 'tame' or 'trained' an ANIMAL is, it's still an animal with instincts - whale, dog, cat, whatever ..........You can not forget that, you have to always be respectful and mindful of it -

IMO, you can never blame the animal for behaving, like an animal - They're called 'killer whales" for a reason .........Aren't they once of the deadliest in their natural habitat?

ETA: The 'tragic' part is the fact that this was witness by kids ........Chat Icon

Re: Horrible Tragedy in Seaworld today

I heard on the news this morning that she was kneeling down, kissing his nose and her pony tail brushed up against his face and he pulled THAT which is how she ended up in the water. Supposedly they said he was 'playing' with her pony tail and in turn, drowned her. Very sad...Chat Icon

i might get flamed for this but.... this is why animals belong in their natural habitat. they arent for performance. i feel awful that the poor woman was killed. now its time to stop treating these whales like domesticated puppies. i personally think its cruel

I totally agree with you! We take these animals out of their natural habitat, "train" them to perform for us and are suprised when they act like the animals that they are?

Thats what I meant...

Though my heart goes out to the trainers family as well.

I believe this is one of the wales we saw last year because it was HUGE - we went to two shows and it was brought out for only one - it was largest whale I had ever seen and reminded me of Free willy because his dorcal fin was bent over - I did wonder if it was a case of "free willy"...

Here is a picture- as I recall, this particular whale did not do any jumps, but just was brought out to show the audience how big they can get - he did do some big splashes too...

ITA. I also don't understand why they would keep a whale in a show that has *already* killed two times before. Who's brilliant decision was that?!

This is the whale that splashes everyone at the end of the show. The trainers are not allowed into the pool with him. This trainer fell in the water and the animal acted. A very sad situation.

The article that I read said the trainer didn't fall in the water, that she was walking and the whale grabbed her and pulled her into the water.

Either way, very very sad Chat Icon

There are varying accounts of what really happened, but either way....let's find another way to entertain ourselves people.....these poor animals along with those in the circus, are just that, they can snap at any moment, provoked or not......

Very sad....Chat Icon

Re: Horrible Tragedy in Seaworld today

FYI they are called killer whales because they were found to kill whales.

They are not whales at all they are dolphins.

It was Whale killer turned INTO killer whales by us the public.

There hasn't been a death by an orca in the wild invovling a human. Ever

I am one of those who supports the discontinuance of the phrase 'killer whale' as its misleading and utterly incorrect.

Its an Orca

Link for Marinebio.org on Orcas

Of course its tragic that she lost her life but she lived to help conserve and education people about Orcas. I think its sad that in her death the one thing that people are doing is ignoring her work and calling the animals "killer whales". Shame

Re: Horrible Tragedy in Seaworld today

I was at Sea World the day the guy snuck into the park in '99. He actually died of hypothermia, but was found in the morning with the Orca bouncing him around like he was a toy. To say this is the third time he had "killed" someone I think is a little inaccurate. Like the PP said, there has never been an account of an Orca attacking (whether injuring or killing) a human in the wild. These animals aren't meant for captivity.

It is awful that this poor woman was killed!

It's so tragic on all accounts.

You just have to remember you are taking a WILD animal and putting it in captivity.

Not excusing it, but Chat Icon Is it fair to do that? (blame the animal)

It's such a catch-22 Chat Icon
